How to understand instructions


Il faut bien fermer la porte
Il faut tourner le bouton-là
Vous tournez le robinet, et après, vous tirez le bouton


  • To say 'you have to...' or 'you must...' do something, you use il faut...


  • You usually follow il faut... with a verb in the infinitive, e.g. Il faut fermer la porte, 'You must close the door'.


  • Another way to give instructions is by using vous or tu with a verb, e.g. vous tournez..., 'you turn...', vous tirez..., 'you pull...', or tu tires..., if you're using the tu form.


  • The simplest way of all is to use the verb on its own, e.g. Fermez le robinet, 'Turn the tap off', Tourne à droite, 'Turn right'.
