In French, everything and everybody - people, places and things - has a gender, i.e. they are either feminine (f) or masculine (m).
In front of masculine words the word for 'the' (known as the definite article) is le; with feminine words it is la.
With human beings the gender of a noun is obvious enough, but with other objects, though, you'll need to learn the gender as you go along.
If a word is plural, the word for 'the' is les, which is pronounced slightly differently from le. You also add an 's' to the end of plural words, though it's not usually pronounced.
