How to describe things

Je préfère le noir
C'est trop petit. Vous avez un peu plus grand ?
C'est un peu cher

  • To talk about clothes, you'll need words like petit, 'small', cher, 'expensive', and noir, 'black'.

  • These are called adjectives, and unlike in English usually come after the thing they're describing, e.g. le t-shirt noir, 'the black t-shirt'. However petit, 'small', and grand, 'big', come before, e.g. la petite chemise, the small shirt.

  • Adjectives can have different endings, which sometimes changes the sound of the word. When describing feminine words they end in -e, e.g. petite, chère, noire.

  • When they're describing more than one thing, adjectives usually end in -s, e.g. les casquettes rouges, 'the red caps'.
