Territories Swedish is an official language in Sweden and in Åland Ahvenanmaa, Finland. It has an equal status with Finnish as an official language in Finland and is one of the languages of the European Union.
Alphabet The Latin alphabet plus å, ä, ö. Earlier versions of the alphabet included the letters þ, æ, ø.
First examples The earliest example of Swedish writing are inscriptions on stones from the 9th century, written in the 16 letter runic alphabet.
Other facts English loan words in Swedish include cykel and krocket (bicycle and croquet). False friends include freestyle, which means personal stereo, and babysitter, which is a kind of child's chair.
