Territories It is spoken as the official language in Bulgaria. Home speakers can be found in Ukraine, Greece, Moldova, Turkey and Romania.
Alphabet Cyrillic Bulgarian
First examples There are records of 10th century funerary inscriptions in Bulgarian in the Cyrillic script. The first book printed in Bulgarian was produced in Venice in 1566.
Other facts Although modern Bulgarian now has an agreed alphabet of 30 letters (it does not include the three Russian characters , there was not always such concord. In the 1870s, at the height of alphabetical confusion, people used a variety of letters, and the Bulgarian alphabet was estimated to have either 24 characters, 38 characters, or something in between.
