On 1 January 2002, the peseta was replaced by the Euro, but did you know...?
- The peseta was actually introduced to prepare Spain to join another European single currency - the ill-fated Latin Monetary Union of 1865. This early union instigated by France, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland and Greece was disbanded in 1927.
- Spanish Euros have their own national features - 1 and 2 euro coins feature the face of King Juan Carlos I. 10, 20 and 50 céntimo coins bear the face of Cervantes, and 1, 2 and 5 céntimo coins feature the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
