On 1 January 2002, the lira was replaced by the Euro, but did you know...?
- There is still great debate among linguists over the spelling of euro in Italian. While most Italian words ending in -o take the plural ending -i, most speakers have opted to leave the plural of euro unchanged - gli euro.
- The old currency lira and the British symbol for the £ share a common root - both come from the Latin word libra, meaning pound.
