Community First Responders - ready for action!
Community First Responders - ready for action!
furniture First Responders are members of the public who are trained in First Aid and the use of a defribullator. The teams cover rural areas, as they can get to casualties early, while an ambulance could still be on its way.

First Responders join a local team which provides 24 hour 999 emergency cover in rural areas of Lancashire where it might take several minutes for an ambulance to arrive. Chances of survival decrease by 10% each minute when a patient's heart has stopped beating.

There are 32 First Responder schemes in Lancashire and they attend more than 220 emergency calls every month. Over the last four years they have saved twenty lives.

Greg Sugden from Bolton le Sands is Lancashire Ambulance Service's 999th recruit. He, his mother, Judith and brother Ryan joined their local First Responders group at the beginning of December and Greg was in action before the end of the month. On his first call-out the team was called to the aid of a local man suffering from severe chest pains. They arrived on the scene within three minutes - a good five minutes before the ambulance arrived from Lancaster.

Greg joined the First Responders because he had no basic knowledge of First Aid - "First Aid is a really good thing to have at work and at home … and it's cool to use the defibrillator!" He has lived in Bolton le Sands all his life and was keen to become a First Responder because it was a way of giving something back to the community.

Call the BBC Radio Lancashire Action Line for details of your local group on 0845 305 9000.
