Skate legends and gnarly tunes
by Carl Arnfield

The recording studio is throbbing with the Gnarly Dude! vibes

opening speech markI guess looking back to when the first 6 guys sat around at Stockport skatepark, happy in the knowledge that we had some people to share our love of boarding, that it would lead to the Middle Age Shred website being frequented by skate legends.

Alan 'Ollie' Gelfand
Alan 'Ollie' Gelfand, 40, still ripping it up

From Tony Alva and Wentzel Ruml IV of the Dog Town & Z boys, to Alan Gelfand, who invented the “ollie”, I think we'd have just laughed and said go away with profanity.

But yet it's true, and that’s the scary fact. I can’t take all the credit for the site at all, many of the guys on the site review parks and take pictures and contacted the aforementioned legends of skate. I just gather all the info and post it on the net.

But here we are 4 months into running the site and we are known all over the place. I think that's due to the fact that we're no threat to anyone and being non profit-making, people have taking a liking to our antics. So much so now that the media can't seem to get enough of watching us fall off (Woody & Ayd, have that down) and now we're getting invites to skate at new skateparks all over the UK… and we're not even good!

Sk8ing and some seriously gnarly music make for a happy bunch of middle aged skateboarders

So I guess that leads me onto Gnarly Dude! What’s Gnarly Dude! I hear you ask, Well Gnarly Dude! (could I use Gnarly Dude! more times in one sentence, well yes!) Gnarly Dude! is a collection of skater bands that all have recorded a track called (you guessed it) Gnarly Dude!, but all the tracks are different but have the same name. Confused? So are we, but that’s the gimmick of it all.

Recording has started and over the next few weeks I will be posting pictures of the bands in the studio, with interviews and comments.

But what is nice about the forthcoming CD Gnarly Dude! is that we are performing a launch gig at the largest skatepark in the UK (Epic Skatepark Birmingham) to promote skater music. Plus, seeing we are in a skatepark, it will become a music and skate jam, how cool is that!

So the date is set for the gig, 4th October, and deadlines have been drawn up to get the CD finished. Now starts the hard work in completing it.

So log on next week to read more about old men falling over and Gnarly Dude! closing quote graphic
