Katherine

Katherine Anne's a lucky girl - she gets to make jewellery all day from her studio at The Watermark in Preston.

We asked her about jewellery designing for celebs!

Where did your interest in jewellery design begin?
"Even as a small child I was a magpie, collectioning all things shiny. By my mid-teens I was making jewellery from weird and wonderful things."

Inspired by nature Katherine's fine silver necklace contrasts knobbles against smooth straight lines.

How did you get started?
"After many years as a florist I decided to go to university to study jewellery design, this I did at the University of Central Lancashire, graduating in 2002."

Which metal is the hardest to work with?
"No metal is easy to work with but once you understand the properties of a particular metal, it does get easier."

How long can it take to make a piece?
"All the work I produce is handmade so no piece is quick. Some pieces take three days to make, with exhibition pieces taking very much longer."

What's the most difficult thing about jewellery making?
"I love every stage, from the initial concept to polishing and cleaning a piece, so hard to say really. The thing I find most difficult is finding time to work on new ideas."

What influences you?
"Everything but nature never ceases to amaze me."

Which piece are you most proud of?
"Usually it's the newest piece in my collection."

What are you up to at the moment?
"Busy stocking galleries for Christmas, producing pieces for the East London Design Show and working on ideas for a bridal exhibition next year."

What's your cliam to fame?
"Helen Walsh (author of Brass) is a collector of my work."

Which celebrity would you like to design for and why?
"Michael Palin, what a challenge that would be!"
