Loo seats, glitz and kitsch!
Lisa Ashcroft
Lisa Ashcroft

Lisa Ashcroft from Fulwood is an artist with a sense of humour! From her comic strip inspired pictures to her funky sculptures...

So where does she get her inspiration from? We asked her about her art...

How would you describe your style?
"It's bright, humourous, fun, funky and
rooted in Pop Art style."

Do you still have any of your early work?
"The early pieces that I haven't sold are stored in my studio in Preston, I exhibit the early pieces when I have a retrospective show."

Do you get most of your inspiration from your travelling?
"Travel and my passion for life are the main influences. My current paintings aren't taken from photographic imagery, instead the painting is about what I remember and the feelings I felt."

Which parts of Lancashire inspire you?
"I have just finished two paintings inspired by the glitz and kitsch of Blackpool - one has flashing lights resembling the arcades. Another recent painting was inspired by Lytham St Annes coastline.

Which is your favourite painting?
"Honeypot - it says everything about my childhood!"

Honeypot
Lisa's favourite - "Honeypot"

What has been your biggest challenge?
"Deadlining a commission for a painting celebrating the Transit of Venus 2004. It's now part of the collection at Astley Hall in Chorley."

If you could make a mask for a celebrity, who would it be for and what would it look like?
"Tommy Cooper, he has a magnificent chin!"

Any top tips for would-be artists?
"If you have even a thought that you want to
create, then art has probably choosen you and not you it! Sometimes it can be a vice but the rewards are endless.... have patience!"

Toilet Humour
Take one recycled loo seat... Lisa's "Toilet Humour"

Your sculpture use a lot of strange objects - what's the weirdest thing you've recycled into a sculpture?
"On arrival in New York to start a fellowship
I picked up a disregarded toilet seat at the bus terminal! It scrubbed up well (marigolds were worn) and I converted it into the sculpture 'Toilet Humour'. The piece had sensor relayed flashing pink LED's implanted around the seat which twikled! I have also used objects that a sex shop were throwing out in Soho NY - there was a manufacturer's fault!"

Hmm, probably be safer to leave it there!
