She's
now branching out into the big screen and has just finished filming
her second film Chicken
Tikka Masala shot in Preston...at the tender age of ten!
Before Hollywood whisks her away, BBC Lancashire's Faizel Vohra puts
the spotlight on our Katy and finds out about on-set pranks, how she's
going to don something fab and pink to the premiere and how she prefers
Schmeichel to her best friend Sam (Chesney)!
Chicken
Tikka Masala is a comedy, did you get up to loads of pranks behind
the scenes?
Loads! Sally, who plays my mum, is the cast prankster, but Joe and
Dom from the crew got up to all sorts of things. They kept making
me laugh when I was supposed to be quiet in the waiting area. There
was curry every day for lunch and tea and so there were lots of
jokes about the smell in the bathroom!
Were you star-struck at all?
I've met lots of famous actors
people who you see loads on
TV
but they've always been really nice. Jane Danson who plays
Leanne Battersby was in A&E when I was there and she was really
kind and friendly, but my mum was disappointed that Martin Shaw
wasn't in the same episode.
My mum always goes with me and I know she would have been seriously
star-struck!
I saw Martin Kemp on the Where The Heart Is set but I didn't talk
to him
he's very striking
really TALL.
There are some really famous Bollywood actors in Chicken Tikka Masala,
but I hadn't really seen them on TV, except for Zorah who is in
Bend It Like Beckham and Anita and Me. She's 92 and she's been in
the acting business for 68 years and she's fab and very lively.
I did lots of scenes with her and we got on really well.
Were
your co-stars friendly?
Yes..they were great. We spent a week rehearsing so we all got to
know each other and after the first day's filming we all went out
for a big meal. Then at the very end there was a big party but I
couldn't go on to the jiggy-down because you had to be over 18 to
get in.
Will
you be going to a big posh premiere for Chicken Tikka Masala?
I hope so. They said there might be a premiere in London, but there
will be one in Preston. I think the film is a 15 so they'll have
to sneak me in when the manager isn't looking!
What will you wear?
I'm hoping to get in touch with Venkat, who did all the costume
in the film, so that he can make me something fab and pink.
After finishing your first film, do you think you'll end up in Hollywood
one day or would you want to stay in Lancashire?
I'd love to make it to Hollywood. Don't get me wrong, I love living
in Lancashire but who wouldn't like living in Beverly Hills?
Mind you, there's a long way to go before then so it's just a dream
really.
What's has been your favourite role so far?
They've all been great really, even if I have been ill or dying!
But it's great experiencing all different roles.
Do
you prefer TV or film?
I like both really but there's not that much difference when you're
doing it. It's good to see yourself on TV
but the big screen
is the best. When I went to the screening of Sleep My Love in Manchester
it was weird seeing my face on the big screen. Eeek..it was a close-up
and I was missing one of my front teeth at the time!
What
do your pals think of you being on TV?
I don't really talk to my friends about it. It would just be like
showing off but I tell them when I'm on and they tell me when they've
seen me.
If
you could pick a soap to be in, which one would you like to star
in and do you have any characters in mind you would like to play?
I don't know which programme I'd like to be on cos I watch them
all. I could say Lizzie McGuire cos that's my favourite, but I don't
think that Carol will be ringing to say that Hollywood has been
on the phone. I'd like to be on the BBC for once
.but I don't
know which character. It's good to play all sorts of roles because
they are all new experiences.
Who's
the best-looking actor you've worked with?
Are you joking? I'm only 10! Actually I should say Sam who plays
Chesney in Coronation Street. He goes to the same drama school as
me and we are best friends
but I don't fancy him
in fact
I prefer Schmeichel!
Are there any actresses you look up to?
Hilary Duff is great, and I like Raven and Jennifer Aniston too.
I loved working with Sally on Chicken Tikka Masala
she's a
great actress, and so were Zorah and Jamila who played the Grandma
and Jimi's mum.
It's also great working with Lesley Dunlop
she is always making
me laugh at the wrong time too! I got told off for laughing when
we were doing a serious scene and she kept pulling funny faces at
me.
What
scene have you had the most fun filming?
There's a really funny bit I have to do with a cow in Chicken Tikka
Masala, but you'll have to go and see that! There were also some
very funny bedroom scenes which I wasn't supposed to understand,
but the whole thing was a lot of fun. People can get stressed when
it's not going right, but usually it's a good laugh
It
sounds glamorous but it must be hard work being an actress. Is there
anything you miss when you're working?
I miss sleeping in my own bed. It sounds quite flash staying in
hotels but I miss my room and my things and my brothers (not!) I
miss school of course (I'm only putting that in case my headmistress
reads this!)
and I miss my dad's cooking (that's actually true!).
