What's been the biggest piece you've ever made?
"A new pair of gates for the entrance to Downham Hall. The originals were stolen! They took three months to make as they had to be hand forged just as the original gates were."

What's been your favourite piece?
"A heron with a trout in its beak."

Do you do traditional blacksmith jobs too?
"Yes I do traditional work but I don't shoe horses!"

What advice woud you offer to anyone interested in a career as a blacksmith/metal artist?
"Find out who your local blacksmith is and offer to help in return for some tuiton.

What are you working on at the moment?
"I've made a stag from horseshoes but for the antlers and I've been asked by Myerscough College to display the stag and also a horse sculpture at their stand at Tatton Park in July."

Any hobnobbing with celebrities who've visited the village?
"Last week I gave some tuition to an actor from the series Born and Bred. The following day the BBC set up in the forge and filmed him playing the part of the village blacksmith. I was asked to be on hand to keep the fire going and advise on the correct use of tools and steel etc."

Hope they paid you! And finally, what's been your strangest metal-related request?
"A very petite lady called and asked if I could repair her marital bed. Seems it was bending in the middle! When I saw her husband I could see why - he was 6ft 5ins and 18 stones, she was 5ft 2ins and eight stones!"
