FACTS

Concrete is a mixture of cement, water, sand and gravel.

Once set, concrete continues to harden. This hardening process can continue for several years.

The strength of concrete is dependent on the ratio of water and cement and the conditions that you
allow it to harden in.

Concrete chairs - they sound a bit cold and not very comfy - why use that material?
I like working in concrete because it is the opposite of wood. It is not a precious material until you have formed it into a useable shape, it can be versatile and durable and if done right comfortable and warm.

What sort of item do you most prefer to work on - eg chairs, lights, tables?
I don't have any preference. Products we design for ourselves (to sell at shows or over the website) are the most enjoyable because you don't have to worry about pleasing a client. Before Christmas we designed and made a set of concrete speakers, they are probably my favourite product at the moment.

What part of the process do you enjoy most - the design or manufacture?
Getting some direction is the hardest part, but once you have got ideas and start making models and prototypes that is the most enjoyable part. Once you have made the first one it becomes more like hard work. It's always a good buzz when you get paid.

What's the strangest thing you've been asked to design/make?
A concrete bed.

What sort of music do you like to listen to as you're creating?
We play all sorts of music when we're working, early ska and reggae, hip hop, soul, rock 'n' roll, dance, and a little bit of country and western. King Tubby and Prince Buster always get me in the right frame of mind.

Any fave tracks?
Master McGrath by The Dubliners
The Militia by Gangstar
Trench Town Rock by Bob Marley
Some Might Say by Oasis
Dreamy Daze by Roots Manuva
Daydreaming by Aretha Franklin

Was music the inspiration behind your company name?
Definitely, we wanted the name and logo to be something you might see on a record sleeve or T-shirt.

Where else do you get your inspiration from?
Usually the achitecture or surrounding environment have a big influence on a piece of furniture, especially if it's for a public space. Sometimes you start with the structural requirements of a job and let that lead a design, other times you start with shapes and form and work out how you can construct it and make it into a comfortable seat.

What product do you wish you'd have designed?
The Vespa.

Who would you like to play you in a film about your life?
For me I'd get Daniel Day Lewis, for Bren I'd get a young Al Pacino and for my Dad I'd get David Jason (if you can't get him, Freddy Boswell will do).

Who would you like to sing the theme tune?
Shane Macgowan could do the soundtrack.
