Life in a Lancashire twin town: Bottrop
Vanessa Pilz
Bottrop babe, Vanessa Pilz

As you pass the welcome sign into a Lancashire town, chances are you'll spot an exotic sounding place name on it, referred to as its 'twin'. What a great excuse to make new friends abroad! Vanessa tells us about life in Blackpool's twin town, Bottrop in Germany.

FACTS

The idea of town twinning was introduced shortly after the Second World War to help rebuild peace and encourage people to exchange experiences of local life.

Bottrop is also twinned with Tourcoing in France, Veszprem in Hungary and Berlin-Wedding and Merseburg in Germany.

What do you do on a Friday night?
opening speech markOn a Friday night I usually go out with friends. We go to the cinema, to a bar or to a nightclub. Not far away, in Oberhausen (approx ten minutes by car), there is a large shopping centre with lots of bars, cafes and a cinema. In Bottrop there are only little facilities to go out and have fun.closing speech mark

What do you usually do at Christmas?
opening speech markI always spend Christmas with my family. Our Christmas celebration is not really typical for German families. Usually you have dinner with a roast goose and then get your presents. We have a late lunch with fish and then in the early evening when it is getting dark, we get our presents. By the way, we celebrate Christmas on December 24. On December 25 we visit other family members and have lunch together. On December 26 I visit friends.closing speech mark

How do you celebrate New Year?
opening speech markOn New Year I meet with friends. We usually cook something together and then play games or just talk until midnight. Then we let off fireworks.
