Mike and Carole Carr offer a range of alternative therapies at The Natural Way in Colne. They gave us the low down on what reflexology is all about.

What is reflexology?
Reflexology is related to acupuncture and acupressure. It uses pressure or reflex points on the feet or hands that correspond to different parts of the body. Reflexology massage stimulates these points, improves circulation, balances and relaxes the body, evoking a sense of well being and enabling the body to heal itself.

How it works?
To explain how Reflexology worked Eunice Ingham used the analogy of blood and energy flows around the body to a flowing river. Just as silt forms in a river where the current slows down, so she theorised that tiny crystalline deposits accumulated around nerve endings in the feet or hands. She believed that the firm pressure of the Reflexologist crushed these tiny crystals, moved them back into the flow and restored normal functioning to the body.

Modern day reflexologists talk about it in terms similar to the oriental therapies, like acupuncture, as balancing the energy flow around the body.

What are the benefits of reflexology?
Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body's natural equilibrium and encourage healing. It produces a profound sense of relaxation, significantly reducing stress and tension, two of the major causes of illness today.

It can benefit almost everyone. Reflexologists do not claim to 'cure-all' but its effects can improve many conditions both mental and physical. These include stress related disorders, high blood pressure, sleep problems and much more.
