How
did you get into the dance scene?
It all began for me in 1990 when I first discovered dance music
through pirate radio stations and Illegal raves.
Soon after that I purchased my first set of turntables and started
buying tracks like 'Orbital Chimes' and 'Strings of Life'.
Things progressed for me as a DJ over the following years. I travelled
around the UK playing venues like Madison's in Bournemouth and Brunel
Rooms in Swindon with the likes of Judge Jules and Dave Seaman.
Eventually I settled back in the North West in my hometown Wigan,
where I decided to start Flawless Records UK.
At the same time I got involved with Neil Smallridge who had just
started a night called On A Plate, which is now very successful.
We have recently got involved with Good Grief from Manchester who
are known all over the country especially after their involvement
with Radio 1 recently.
We have decided to throw a boat party on August the 9th which should
be fun! Our music policy is funky pumpin house however Flawless
Records has a trance tip to the label as well.
I work under the name of Adagio when producing but when DJ'ing it's
just plain old Lee Roby so people know who I am, well for the moment
anyway!
You can check out On A Plate on the 28th June at Kilhey Court, Standish,
Wigan and then again on August 9th!!
You've set up a record label - tell us a little about what you've
been doing with this. Flawless Records UK has been running now
for 12 months, I launched it last summer and a couple of months
after was joined by Andy Charnock who works with me on selected
projects.
Its first release was produced by Kenny Hayes from 'All Around The
World Records' it's an uplifting trance anthem with a Chicane style
groove that's definitely one for the Balearics this year.
It's got an excellent flip side to it that's been done by local
Preston producer 'Sandro" called 'Touch Me'. The songs got all the
café Mambo ambient style sounds with a pumpin of beat baseline,
sounds good!!
This
record is available now through all good record shops via Unique
Distribution.
The second release is a real funky diva number, produced by French
guys D'Allergic. The tracks called 'Deep' and it's going to be out
on 1st July.
The promo's have already had a lot of airtime from radio stations
and was on Mark Freejacks Rock FM acid test 3 weeks in a row. Its
got an original vocal done by Jemma Blades and all the fancy guitar
licks and rollin baselines are done by live instruments giving it
a nice warm feel just right for the summer.
What's the latest gossip from Flawless? Any tips?
My secret weapon for this year though is our August release by 'The
Sucker Tips' the tracks called 'Keep on Pumpin it up' and was originally
done by the 'Freestyle Orchestra'.
It's a 4 track double pack with two rockin house mixes one of them
by D'allergic and two uplifting trance mixes with progressive style
build ups leading into major atmospheric drops, come on!!!
I can't wait to get this baby out into the shops, the promo's are
over in Ibiza next week and you can probably hear it played by Freejack
on Rock FM from 1st July. Without giving too much away we've got
several tracks lined up for this year that will put us on the map.
We have recently hooked up with Sheffield Producer/Engineer 'Nick
B' who's been working last year with progressive label 'Convert'
he does all the engineering and co production for my tracks at the
Flawless Studio's in Wigan.
So
keep your eyes on the buzz charts and watch this space!
Anything else on the horizon?
We're opening a new record shop in Hallgate Wigan called Flawless
Records UK Retail (strangely enough) which will be focusing on Soul,
Hip-Hop, R&B Funky House, Trance you name it!!!
We will be having a grand opening day where we will be giving away
free records, CD's record bags and loads of other stuff so keep
a look out for flyers and posters advertising in July!
