You've
been DJ'ing for many years - what keeps you going?
The fear of having to dance in public! I've never really thought
what keeps me going. The only thing I can put it down to is my love
of music. That's the only thing really. Hearing commercial radio
stations pumping out the same (safe / hit) 20 records all day really
frustrates me, because there's so much more good music out there.
By DJ'ing I get a chance to introduce it into other people's lives,
people who wouldn't normally here it. Plus it's usually good fun
& always a pleasure really.
The dance scene has really evolved since the boom in the 80's/early
90's - how do you see the next ten years?
The bubble has well & truly burst, but it had to. It was such a
big thing & its growth lasted longer than anyone could ever have
predicted, so something had to give at some point.
We are already feeling a backlash with kids moving back towards
rock music and band culture, but that won't last forever.
What do you see as the essence of your success?
Luck & the love of it all. At the start it was all to do with being
in the right place at the right time, pure luck. But to keep it
going for a decade means you must be pretty good.
Where have you travelled to DJ?
All over Europe. Off the top of my head, Italy, Germany, Spain.
What clubs would you like to play and why? At the moment
nowhere really springs to mind. Fabric is the probably the only
club in the UK that would get me excited, but I don't think I'd
be able to completely do "my thing" there.
I always wanted to play the Courtyard at Cream & was lucky enough
to do so before they closed down.
When I first walked in there, years before I actually played I just
thought it was the most perfect club "space" I'd ever seen.
Oakie was playing and the layout of the room, the sound quality
etc., was the best in the UK if not the world at that time. I also
really wanted to play the main room at Amnesia in Ibiza & was lucky
enough to do so last summer.
I went there in 1992 & it blew me away. It just seemed so big, and
I thought how do you fill a space like this?
Who do you most admire in music today? Damian Harris. Head
Honcho of Skint Records (v. successful label that never sells out),
Top Notch Producer & DJ.
Who is your music legend?
Tough one. Until recently I was so focused on house music that I
never really listened to anything else. 2 weeks ago I would have
probably said Prince, but then last week I was listening to The
Beatles, so it would have been them and this week I've been playing
lots of old school hip hop & electro, and never really realised
how much good stuff The Sugarhill Gang put out.
Ibiza - dead and buried, or ready to fight another day?
Personally, dead & buried. I said last year that it would be the
last time I ever went & unless I get some amazing offer to work
there it will be. I've been nearly every year since 1991 & it is
now horribly unappealing.
Who to watch - what DJs, labels and artists are heading for the
top?
DJ wise there is a guy called Jonathon Lisle who is getting a great
name for himself playing "atmospheric breaks". Label's: Personal
Theatre!
