To
be totally truthful and ruthless, this is an annoyingly nonsense
film with a "surprising twist" that isn't in the least
bit surprising. It's a complete let down and goes down in my books
as the worst film of the year so far.
It
also simply proves that M. Night Shyamalan has lost his way as a
director (mind you I should have guessed that with 'Signs'). He
will no doubt be deluded however, into thinking that 'The Village'
is the masterpiece of the century, simply because it has done so
well at the box office
which may I say has only happened because
the trailers have lead us, the unsuspecting public, to believe that
this film is something which it is not
i.e. a scary, horror
flick! Don't be duped!
What
is even more annoying
and sickeningly so
is that somehow
Shyamalan manages to get you to stay put in your cinema seat with
his intermittent moments of tension, intrigue and some sly cinematic
tricks, but ultimately you are left wholly unfulfilled, utterly
cheated and for the most part
bored!
'The
Village' is supposed to be a "thrilling tale" (if you
experience this let me know how you managed it) of a village (believe
it or not) surrounded by forbidden woods, supposedly filled with
clawed beasts, who favour the colour red and are known to the inhabitants
as 'those we don't speak of'.
In
fact, the evil which lurks beyond the boundaries is so unnerving
that only Lucius Hunt (Joaquin Phoenix) dare venture beyond them.
It soon becomes apparent though that this brave feat may threaten
the future of the village, but perhaps not in the way it first seems
and
after very little thought you'll soon realise that the evil outside
might be less problematic then that which lurks within
and
without giving anymore away (although I'm sure it will only take
you five minutes to figure this plot out
if you're lucky) that's
about it!
This
films one saving grace is its acting (it certainly needed something)
with
star performances from Pheonix and Bryce Dallas Howard who plays,
Ivy Walker, Lucius' love interest
things could have been a
lot better than they were. In fact, if Shyamalan had managed to
give any sort of strength to this films revelation it could have
been great
but potential isn't everything! I'm sure the book
would have been better, had there been one!
Don't
miss our films section!
You know you wanna have a nosey at it!
