 Ahh…
at last some great British humour and a cracking film to boot, proving
that our industry is very much alive, unlike most of the cast here!
Directed
by Edgar Wright and co-written by and starring Simon Pegg, both
of Channel 4's series 'Spaced', not surprisingly this is more of
a feature length TV programme than a film, but it not only boasts
some well paced action, top direction and acting, it also has an
hilarious script which will have you laughing out loud on more than
one occasion, I'm sure!
Following
in the footsteps of Peter 'Lord of the Rings' Jackson's, 'Braindead'
from 1992, 'Shaun of the Dead' is a zombie rom-com. It's also been
perfectly timed to hit the box office at the same time as the re-make
of 'Dawn of the Dead' and I must say it shows an insightful understanding
of, and admiration for the original horror movie…. having said
that you'll never look 'Dawn of the Dead' in the same light again!
It
tells the story of Shaun (Simon Pegg), a hopeless thirty-something,
who lacks ambition and still only works as an assistant of an electrical
store, after many years in the business. He's useless in love too
and always chooses to take his best friend and couch potato, Ed
(Nick Frost) along on his dates… and so after spending every
night in their local pub, The Winchester, (including on their third
year anniversary, I might add) his girlfriend Liz (Kate Ashfield)
finally decides enough is enough and dumps him.
Just
as Shaun begins to descend into a deep depression… the un-dead
start roaming the streets (obviously?!) of Crouch End in London
where he lives (which some believe pays homage to the 'X-Files',
because this is where Gillian Anderson, a.k.a. Scully, spent some
of her childhood)… ANYWAY, back to the story… all this
flesh eating nonsense makes Shaun realise just how much Liz means
to him, so he sets out like a knight in shining armour to save her
from the hell-bent zombies and win back her heart. The trouble is
the only 'win' Shaun seems to know is the one which appears in the
name of his favourite watering hole, 'The WINchester', where he
plans to hide until the rampage is over!
And
while our heroes are experiencing a night from hell, all I can promise
you is some fab entertainment and performances, including those
from Penelope Wilton and Bill Nighy, who play Shaun's mum and stepdad,
Lucy Davis, a.k.a. Dawn Tinsley from 'The Office', Dylan Moran,
Matt Lucas a.k.a. George Dawes from 'Shooting Stars' and writer
of 'Little Britain'… do I really need to go on? This is quite
simply a class act!
