This
film is 'Duplex' in every sense of the word
in fact, it's pretty
much 'Throw Momma From The Train' - Take 2, if not a carbon copy
of 'Death To Smoochy', Danny DeVito's last directorial attempt
I
mean has this man got no other ideas?
It
tells the story of Alex Rose (Ben Stiller) and Nancy Kendricks (Drew
Barrymore)
a perfect couple, very much in love and almost living
the American Dream, if only they could find their dream home...and
when they do eventually find somewhere to live it actually turns
out to be more of a nightmare.
Not
only is the Brooklyn duplex spacious and airy, it also comes with
something they hadn't quite bargained for
Mrs. Connelly (Eileen
Essel)
a rent controlled tenant who seems like an unassuming
old lady at first, until she starts watching telly at top volume
and practising her brass instrument at all hours of the day and
night
and what's worse is that Alex and Nancy soon come to
realise they can't get rid of her unless she dies
You
can probably guess the rest
it's that predictable
but
basically Alex and Nancy turn from good-natured citizens into homicidal
maniacs and start a murder plot against Mrs. Connelly, setting all
sorts of death traps around the house
yes very sick indeed,
but what's even more disturbing is that this black comedy could
have been very funny
but the story and jokes are just regurgitated
rubbish!
In
short
it starts off devilishly well, but falters in the latter
half and turns into something quite hellish
it certainly wouldn't
have been snapped up by Ealing Studios that's a fact and it more
than fails where 'War of the Roses' well and truly succeeds.
Better
hours have been spent pulling teeth!
