Recycling Lives

Monday 28th April - Friday 2nd May 2008...

Recycling Lives in Preston offers a multi-agency solution to a variety of topical issues. Addressing worklessness and homelessness, through our own activities and by encouraging social-entrepreneurialism, Recycling Lives aims to reduce the number of people currently receiving state benefit.

We use effective training and support programmes and provide access to employment, performing a range of recycling activities using new skills acquired from our work based training. Extensive pastoral support and mentoring are provided to assist in personal rehabilitation; and by promoting good social skills development and inspiration to all who partake in Recycling Lives activities, we strive to break the cycle of negativity and anti-social behaviour.

Independent Living

Monday 14th - Friday 18th April 2008...

LCIL (Lancashire Centre for Independent Living) was established at the beginning of 2006 as Lancashire Support Services (LSS) as the need for a local user-led group providing information and advice to disabled people relating to Independent Living was identified.

We currently provide the following services:

Information & Advice - Our team of Independent Living Advisors support disabled people who have chosen to receive Direct Payments monies to become employers of care staff (or to directly contract with care providers). This means that a person with a disability manages their own ‘Personal Assistant(s)’ therefore enjoying far more independence and control.

Peer Support - Disabled people who have been employing their own Personal Assistants / Care Workers for some time and have experience of managing staff and the associated responsibilities volunteer their time to assist disabled people who are new to this scheme or interested in finding out more about it.

LCIL employs 11 staff and over 30 volunteers across Lancashire and operates from an office base in central Preston. LCIL is a registered Charity and a ‘None for Profit’ Company.

Neal Buckley is a funeral director at Longton Hutton & Penwortham Funeral Services.  After leaving school he served his apprenticeship as a joiner at a local firm who was also the undertaker - this is where he first got interested in the job!

Neal left to pursue this career with a large family firm in Preston before starting his own undertaking business, offering the traditional personalised service. They are now into their 12th year and have two branches with chapels of rest and a fleet of hearses and limousines. The two full time staff now also mean that Neal gets a holiday!

Lostock Hall Medical Centre

Monday 31st March - Friday 4th April 2008...

Lostock Hall Medical Centre on Leyland Road in Lostock Hall, Preston, is a very busy surgery with over 4000 patients on its books.

Dr. Prasad has worked at the surgery since 1977 and April Fools Day 2008 really does see him retire from the post - but maybe not for good, because he hopes to keep in touch with many of the patients he has seen over the past 31 years.

Although he may not hang his coat and stethoscope up forever, Dr. Prasad does hope he'll find more time to play his favourite past time, golf! So next time you need to call upon his services, the best place to find him might be in the bunker!

Have Your Say

Just listening to the workplace of the week and I was interested in the comments of the contributer with regard to disability. I am not a wheelchair user but rely on crutches to get about - accessability is an issue for me too. For instance if there is a ramp into a building it is agony to walk up particularly if it takes you the long way around. Stairs are a nightmare for me too - lifts are essential with large buildings as I find it hard to walk a long way. Could you pass on a plea to think about us too when designing buildings?

Rachna Nair
The program is great. I happen to be Dr. R Prasads grand neice. I think he is a great cook as well as a great doctor. He is a good person and seems to be well-liked by all his colleauges and patients.
