Listen Again

I love Marillion

By Phil Cunliffe
Listen again as BBC Radio Lancashire's Phil Cunliffe gets to meet and interview his idol...Marillion's lead singer Steve Hogarth.

Marillion

He caught up with the veteran rockers who are back with a new single, album and tour.

Somewhere Else is the band's fourteenth studio album - that's three more albums than U2, two more than The Beatles, and the same number as The Ramones, a feat rare in the annals of rock.

The interview will be on BBC Radio Lancashire's FNAT on 13 April but you can hear life-long Marillion anorak Cunliffe talking to lead singer, Steve Hogarth below:

They are one of the most creative bands ever with their two distinct period with Fish, then Steve H at the helm. Have to say I love both - especially the dreamy H variant. However, I do miss the razor sharp lyrics of Fish. H is a fine fellow - I also interviewed him a couple of years back on a solo tour.Only criticism to be levelled at the latest album is it does rather stay on the same sonic register and Rothery is a little lost in the guitar mix. Have to say that, while saluting their imagination on the download front I still prefer a physical disk - and they also deserve to make a living.

Been following Marillion since I was at school. Saw them in Sheffield whilst at Leeds Uni and they were awesome. Somewhere Else isn't Marillion at their best, but their latest Happiness is the Road certainly is and you can download it for free and "try before you buy!"

Magic. Music is Marillion...and Marillion is more than only Music...

Henry
The best kept secret in rock music needs their time in the sun. I am predicting that 2008, Marillion will finally be exposed to the masses once again. It is time, they deserve it.

Ian
Marillion....This band just keeps getting better all the time !

Mark
Somewhere Else is an awesome album.Marillion are the best band in the world.Listen without prejudice!

leef
first saw them in 84 when I was 14 - followed them ever since....what more can I say!

tom young
marillion are ace

Marillion are to music what Churchill and Luther King were to speech making. This is not for the background music brigade...the lyrics and music are seriously wrought..the volume knob demands to be turned north and the listener needs to become involved. Once locked in you will not let go .. which explains the immense loyalty of their followers. I have lots of great music at home but no band has the musical power and sheer drama of these guys. "Here we are, at the beginning of the last century for man" a disturbing prohecy and a musical tour de force on the new album. When the world ends I'll choose this music for the closing edits. Go Buy.

David
Love the band. But their last two albums SUCK!

Christian
I have never known such a band that continually improves album after album, yet gets ignored by radio staions up and down the country. I appreciate that some of their music does not hit you straight away, but after two or three listens, Somewhere Else has just blown me away! Fantastic!!!

hera
the best band in the world!

wayne
love this band best album ever

If you like your music to give you a quick fix then don't bother listening to Marillion. If, on the other hand, you're looking for depth, soul, passion, emotion and honesty then you're search is over. In my opinion they are the most inspirational and talented band ever. Over 25 years in the music biz and still getting better

Dan Lawrence
Great band! Continually inventive, making sure each album sounds fresh and new. Steve Rothery is a god!!!! :)

Sabine
Marillion.....BEST BAND EVER!!!!

David D
Amazing. Always making great music, and always changing the rules of the game.

Kath Felton
Fantastic band!! They treat us fans like part of their family and involve us in everything. New album stunning.

jason
Marillion are the greatest and most under-rated bands in the world. Unfortunately most people of a certain age remember them for one or two hit singles released back in 1985. Their post 1988 output is largely ignored by the public at large which is a shame as they have released some of the finest and most tought provoking music I have ever heard. Check out Brave, Afraid of Sunlight, Anoraknophobia and Marbles for more details!

Matt
Great band. I wasn't even sure if I liked the new album when I first heard it. After a few listens, it has grown on me more and more. Now I think it's great! That's what Marillion's music does - it weaves its way into your heart and soul. Terrific stuff!

Pierre Martin
The best rock 'n roll band all over the world !!!!

Steve Gunn
Best band I know

Jem Morris
A friend lent me the new album and its great! (Off to buy it now)
