Sandra's profile... "I was born in Blackpool in 1941 and attended the Collegiate Grammar School. I went to Art College for a short time and to several art courses over the years. I have always painted, although lapsed for many years when my family was young. I lived in Sweden for over 20 years after marrying a Swede, and have moved around the world a lot with my husband and his job before returning to England in 2002 to retire to Lytham St Annes.
I enjoy having time to paint and being a member of the Lytham St Annes Society where I am President this year. I also run a watercolour workshop there. The society has spring and summer exhibition every year held at the Drive Methodist Church in St Annes. We also have an exhibition at the Heritage Centre in Lytham every autumn, and two open air exhibitions, one in St Annes and one in Lytham. I exhibit at these. I have also exhibited in Milnthorpe, Garstang and Cockerham. My work is mainly in watercolour where I try to find the essence of things and capture a mood or atmosphere as in “Out of the Blue” and “Winter Moon”. I also try and experiment with watercolour and see what it can do. Things happen with watercolour which are impossible to predict and this is fascinating. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t! “Xanadu” was my interpretation of the first lines of Coleridge’s poem. It is watercolour and ink sprayed onto the surface. I try to work more abstract and “Fragments” is an example of this. It is based on a sketch of the bark of a tree. I have also started to make collages and “Lithosphere” is an example. I have used pieces of material: card, paper, stones, sand, all fastened with acrylic medium and painted with acrylic paints. “Autumn Leaves” is a watercolour painted mainly in a negative technique. I have also created some flower paintings in watercolour and a Life drawing which is something I enjoy doing as it demands concentration and skill. All these works have been painted during the last couple of years." |
