Alfred Wainwright

Walking with Wainwright

The Feature celebrates the centenary of the birth of one of the great Lancastrians... Alfred Wainwright, author of the famous 'Pictorial Guides To The Lakeland Fells'.

AW, as he was widely known, grew up in Blackburn and co-founded Blackburn Rovers supporters' club!

But his towering achievement is the seven-book series of hand-written and hand-drawn Lakes guides, which took thirteen years to produce.

Steve Becker talks to Eric Robson, who made three television series with Wainwright; to the Wainwright Society; and to one of the youngest walkers to complete the 214 Lakes summits, aged just nine!

Had a thrilling weekend ascending Pendle with members of the Online Fellwalking Club and Wainwright Society followed by a meal and talk by outdoor author Mark Richards. Sunday was incredible and I was really proud to have been born in Blackburn. The service at Blackburn Cathedral was really moving and I personally finished off the weekend by going up onto Audley Range to see AW's childhood home. I'm at home in London now and still on a high!

Thank you for a superb broadcast which I have listened to on the Web at 11.32pm following the excellent service in Blackburn Cathedral. This programme encapsulates everything about 'AW'. Is it possible to obtain a recording from BBC Radio Lancashire? Warmest wishes Geoff.Mackenzie.

An excellent programme...reviewing the life of a fascinating man captivated by the loveliness of the Lake District. Apparent contraditions emerge to be explained..the apparent willful neglect of his marriage, his calousness in dismssing his wife decision to leave him without any appreciation of her contributions...indeed his intial concept and phrasing of the notion of marriage.."they are all the same with a sack over their heads" Contrast this with his obvious love and "marriage" to the Lakeland hills. He was luckly to have experienced the England life-style of the mid 20th century... May he rest in peace among the Haystacks.
