The BBC Bus kicks off 2007 at Preston East Children’s Centre - Sure Start and the theme of the week is about sticking to those New Year Resolutions...

FRIDAY 12 JANUARY

Friday afternoons are totally different to Monday mornings. Obvious we know but what we mean is when we turn up at the venue first thing Monday we don’t know the people or the visitors, as the week goes along we get to know bits and by Friday at 4pm we could probably tell you their inside leg measurement.

It’s been a stonker this week, not overly busy but working with RAW and partnering up with the health experts has been a massive success. The ladies from Sure Start have had a full MOT, most passed but there are always a couple of naughty girls in a group mentioning no names of those who had a sneaky drag!

Big thanks to all the staff at SS and our partners from the health authorities, the two Phil’s have been ace, they have worked their little socks off and we really appreciate it, well done everyone.

Special moments include Sally showing off her tail to the kids in class only for a little boy to have a right good fiddle with it, Chris’s was listening to stories the kids were getting whist being dressed as Robin Hood and they both agree that the cheese and onion pie was first rate (Carolyn the nutritionists didn’t agree though!).

Finally Sal and Chris thought they would have one last ride on the snake and sadly wave bye bye to Sure Start.

THURSDAY 11 JANUARY

Sometimes we look at each other and our surroundings and wonder. We also realise that we probably have the best jobs in the world. Where else do you get the chance of dressing up one week in 40’s gear then a few weeks later you are prancing around dressed as a big white rabbit and Robin Hood?

Chris was shocked when he was shown that his hand hygiene isn’t as good as he first thought; Anita had rigged up an ultra violet lamp system that could show just where people missed washing. Sal played if crafty and watched everyone else first, learnt the tricks and came top of the class by…..well by basically cheating.

Whilst typing the bus again is rocking, the wind is wild – no, I mean it this time. The bus is bottom heavy, bit like our presenter and when the wind catches it the bus sways like a flower in the breeze.

Another great day today – the staff here are great and seeing the walkers leave again, this time in full costume was brill.

One thing we will remember about this gig is the story telling, while Chris and Sal were rigging the bus this morning they had to cable up in the story telling room. Rogan was telling a story to the kids in the RAW chair and Chris and Sal couldn’t help but hear, they were very near the stage of folding their legs and parking up with the kids on the RAW carpet when they realised they had to do the first broadcast of the day into Ted Robbins program.

Again, if tomorrow is as good as today we are laughing.

WEDNESDAY 10 JANUARY 2007

It’s been a difficult day on the bus for Chris, he has the mindset of a little boy and had to listen to Sal chatting with a sexual health expert and then had to avert his eyes for most of the day from what he called “strange shaped objects” - the technical term being ‘condom demonstrators’!

Rachel, a self-titled ‘tooth fairy’, turned up armed with dental floss and tooth brushes to discuss oral health and there were free blood pressure and Body Mass Index checks available from Stacey and Becky the Physical Activity Referral Officers.

Laura and Jilly from Carrefour Health and Beauty in Preston went where no man or woman has ever gone before today - right into the pores of Sally’s skin. They were ‘face mapping’ her which basically means finding out how her celebrity lifestyle is affecting her skin. It’s a wonder how they could see anything under her bobble hat though – she thinks she’s still on the piste. Or perhaps that’s why her skin’s in such a mess.

We are very pleased with the success of the measured mile, yesterday 10 people went out and today that increased to 15. It makes it all worth while watching these people leave all together chatting and laughing, pushing prams and doing something they hadn’t dreamed of doing.

Steve has decided he has had enough, he has finally quit smoking and today took part in a Carbon Monoxide test and passed with flying colours, that’s after just a few hours of stopping. We will be monitoring his progress over the coming weeks!

TUESDAY 9 JANUARY 2007

They might look cool as cucumbers but the BBC Bus team had to cope with a power cut just before today's show. True pros! Rogan (centre) telling some tales.

Not wishing to bore you dear reader but we must today return to the weather. The BBC bus is again rocking, the wind is wild and the rain hits you like a trillion needles – are we poetic or what!!

Along with “a New Year a new you” campaign we are working with RAW www.bbc.co.uk/raw Sure start in Preston are holding events all week and today Rogan will be telling stories to music, bounce and rhyme includes musical activities for children and parents.

At the time of typing Sue has just returned from a measured mile walk, she’s been accompanied by 10 members of staff from Sure Start, these feisty ladies braved the elements and 20 minutes after setting off returned with healthy glows vowing to do the same every day!

Tomorrow we will be meeting John Watson. John listeners to BBC radio Lancashire and decided to look at our website; he found that the bus was located at Sure Start in Preston and decide to email us with some fascinating facts; we couldn’t just leave it like that so we rang him back, check out the results tomorrow 2pm till 3.

4 minutes before we went on air we had a power cut, Sally was in the process of typing up a running order, Chris was editing an interview and Sue was sending a recording to the desk on the bus. Losing power is never a good idea but at such a critical stage it was a near disaster, we managed to regain power to the bus and quickly finished JUST in time for the program to start at 1405.

10 seconds before Sally went live we were still printing our running orders and trying to figure out how long she should talk before the vocals started on the first record.

Soooo many things can and do go wrong but we wouldn’t have it any other way this is one of the joys of live radio every day out on the road.

MONDAY 8 JANUARY 2007

Happy New Year! A New Year means ‘A New You’ on the BBC Bus this week at the Preston East Children’s Centre (Sure Start)…when Chris finally found it that is!

After circling pretty much the length and breadth of Watling Street Road in Fulwood, it wasn’t until Chris finally arrived at Sure Start that the BBC Bus team realised two poor women had been following him, wrongly assuming that he knew where he was going! At least they got a tour of the area. They saw Fulwood Barracks at least 4 times this morning!

Lisa, Karen and Nav from Preston City Council Leisure Services jumped on board the BBC Bus and soon wondered why when Sally started the morning by air guitar dancing to Bryan Adams. At least she’s keeping fit and staying true to her New Year’s Resolutions, which is the theme of the week.

Local resident and smoker Steve Allen has pledged to give up the nicotine on Wednesday. Not only is he stubbing out the cigarette habit, he’s also been roped into losing a few pounds and took part in a measured mile walk organised by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

Let’s see what the BBC Bus team can give up this week, it certainly won’t be free food if we know Chris, Sally and Sue!

i missed the programme where the bus turned up at the Rostron arms. Is there any way i can listen to the show again. I believe radio lancs where trying to find out where the name Rostron derives from. As i am a rostron living in preston it would be interesting to listen to what radio lancs has to say. The bus has been just fantastic so far this week. They have helped to promote an important Community Arts Festival taking place over the bank holiday, talked to the Mayor, read poetry, viewed an art exhibition, interviewed writers, photographers, poets and spoken to those two crazy old women - Marjorie and Wendy and much more and it's only Wednesday. I don't know how they do it but I'm glad they do.Wendy Wood

My Mum Muriel Wearne told me that the bus is coming to Clitheroe near to where she lives but could not go along due to having got gastroenteritis tummy bug. Clitheroe is a lovely place but property prices and rents are ridiculously high priced by greedy landlords and estate agents and want to personally move relocate back to this area from Skipton but cant afford to find anything affordable and good quality decent. I love listening to Radio Lancashire but like my Mother sometimes think that the presenters act to daft some of the time but listen to the great show anyway and where has dennis chemist programme gone he is not on that much these days

We were very impressed with Sally and Chris they made the week at our Antique Centre lot of fun, not only did they turn up once the buss had been taken away. They even went out and found people in the village to interview on the radio, including kids at the schools and also had singers and artists etc this made for a very enjoyable week to be had by all.
