Ron's Rugby Union Round Up

Ron reports on all the news on the local Rugby Union action...

Fylde and Preston Grasshoppers were unable to grab the spoils in their weekend league encounters. Fylde despite having home advantage went down 34-27 against a spirited Darlington MP side that took charge in the first half to lead 22-10 at the break.

There was little consolation for the Lancastrians in picking up a losing bonus point  as they went in search of their first win in the New Year.

Winger Oliver Brennand again brought some hope scampering over for a couple of tries whilst the other winger Nick Royle also scampered over the line. John Armstrong notched up his side's remaining points with his boot.

It was a long journey home for Hoppers from the Midlands where they suffered their most humiliating defeat of the season so far losing to Rugby Lions 57-7.

Vale of Lune also lost to league leaders Chester at home in N2W 34-11 despite a gallant effort against a much classier side. Adam Armstrong kicked 2 penalties and hooker Gavin Barton crowned a storming game with a try.

Blackburn continue to go on and upwards with yet another win to stay clear at the top of the N Lancs/Cumbria table. They beat Wigton at home 39-13. Rossendale kept up their chase in second spot beating Oldham 25-13 away from home. Fleetwood's game against Kirkby Lonsdale was postponed.

  • Next Saturday most attention will be on the start of the RBS 6 Nations Championship with England kicking off at Twickenham against Wales. Ireland host Italy at Croke Park and Scotland face France at Murrayfield on Sunday.
Whilst most of the Lancashire Clubs are without games one club that will be flying the flag for the region is undoubtedly Blackburn. They will travel to the North East to take on Horden in round 6 of the IDF Senior Vase competition with the possibility of a trip to Twickkenham coming closer.
