The home side scored the opening try within two minutes of the kick-off and the visitors from Liverpool never really recovered from that. Paul Brown kicked the game off and Garstang immediately gained possession of the ball. After some big forward drives the ball was recycled to Lee Acton who crashed over the line, despite the attentions of two would-be tacklers. Mark Gorst added the simple conversion (7-0).
Garstang were in total control up front and, despite some courageous Mossley Hill defence, it was little surprise when Richard Orr powered through to score under the posts (14-0). From the restart the ball was taken forward before being recycled to Chris ter Bekke who had the speed and awareness to get through a gap and squeeze over in the corner (19-0). Garstang were now playing some of their best rugby of the season and the next try was a joy to watch. The ball was passed between the forwards and backs, before eventually coming to Keith Yates who strolled over the line (26-0). With just over 20 minutes gone the game was effectively over as a contest but the dominant pack were in no mood to take the foot off the pedal, and they were giving the visitors a miserable afternoon. Richard Orr, who was having his best game of the season, was relishing the open space he had to run into and he gleefully went over for his second try of the day on the half hour mark (31-0). Within a minute of the restart Chris ter Bekke matched him with his second try of the afternoon. He picked the ball up at the base of the scrum before outpacing the back row forwards and winger to stretch over and score in the corner (36-0). With half-time looming Ben Greenwood was withdrawn with an injury and he was replaced by Duncan Lambert. On the stroke of half time Garstang carved out another chance, the ball was flipped out to Max Everest, who was loitering on the wing, and he strolled over the line to score (41-0). At half time Simon Knox, who has not played since April 2005, was brought on. He made an immediate impact when the ball was spun out to the left wing and he went over to score Garstang’s eighth try of the afternoon (46-0). At this point it looked like Garstang were going to rack up a cricket score but the game slowed right down and they became unable to exert any real pressure on the visitors. Despite the introductions of John Corless and Lee Palmer there were no real try scoring chances, for either side, in the last half hour. The game was played out and Garstang eased to a comfortable win. Paul Brown won the Man of the Match award for a tireless display behind a dominant pack. Captain's verdict: The first half performance was top drawer. Although we tailed off a little bit in the second half it was understandable as the game was already won.
