Bird watching - where do you start?

BBC Autumnwatch and the coverage by BBC Radio Lancashire and here on the web has inevitably got a lot of people twitching, but if you're only a novice where do you start?

Sue Hendey 'focused' her attention on a small hide at WWT Martin Mere in Lancashire, where she hoped she'd find some answers.

I work for the RSPCA and recieved a call from a member of the public who has seen a sarus crane in a park in barrowford Lancashire - they have photo evidence of the bird - after checking it seems no zoo or collector are missing any and the bird is not ringed - would it be possible for one to migrate here????

David Beattie.Waxwings can sometimes be seen on Mincing Lane in Blackburn (Town Center)feeding on berries, they come over from northern Europe when the weather gets very cold usually Dec/Jan/Feb is the best time to see them, they don't always arrive in Lancashire but I have seen them 3 years out of the last five.Ms June Riley.White Coppice is a very good place to visit with many walks over different habitats which is the key to seeing the most species, moorland, lakes, woodland you will find it all at White Coppice, I have seen Green Woodpecker, Grebe, Long Tailed Tit, Buzzards, Yellow Wagtail,Whimbrel, Nuthatch, Cuckoo, Woodlark, Skylark, Curlew to name but a few take a trip out there, you won't regret it.
