Phil Brown

Whistle-blower Phil loves his folk and roots music...

Coming up:

June 19th - Eric Bogle & John Munro

June 26th. - The Traditions Festival, Lostock Hall.

July 3rd - Martin Simpson

July 10th - Mr & Mrs.

Phil Brown has been involved in folk and roots music for more years than he cares to remember. Perhaps best known as a virtuoso of the whistle, as evidenced by his three successful albums, "Whistling for the Moon", "Pendle Moon" and "Celtic Moon". Phil has been involved in traditional music in almost every capacity.

He has played with numerous line-ups over the past three decades and continues to perform as a multi-instrumentalist and singer with North West favourites Loose Chippings and Shake-a-Leg.

He is in great demand nationally as a workshop leader on folk music in general and whistles in particular, and has put his unrivalled knowledge of the high and low whistle to commercial use with his specialist business Big Whistle Music.

He has been organiser, musical director and prime mover at a wide range of concerts, ceilidhs and festivals throughout Lancashire. At heart he is simply a fan of traditional music who sees all his activities as different expressions of the same goal - to promote and pass on enjoyment in traditional and roots music.

Phil Thompson
I have just come home from the Rachael and Zak event on 13 May. It was an absolute delight! Thank you so much for organising the event, and inviting listeners to enjoy the wonderful joys of an excellent live performance. Dylan, who played before the main attraction, was also an excellent musician and entertainer. Thank you - I will come again!

Des in Accy
I agree. Mary has a great voice and 'Sailing Boat' is a smasher.

Chimicum Rain
I thought last night was great - really funny banter, and I loved the music. Bring it on!xxx

Barbara
Also Dylan. He is superb as always. Love everything he does (especially Acoustic Club, Osw.) x

Barbara
Mary's voice is absolutelysuperb and has not lost anyof it's perfection. Dylan is brill too.

Paul, Haslingden
This must be one of the best music prgrammes on local radio anywhere in the country. Phil's eclectic choice of music and guests means that even those not particularly interested in folk music would still enjoy the show. A real credit to the presenter and producer. The specialist music programmes on BBC Radio Lancs are exceptional; unlike the dire muzak chosen by that comatose computer during the day.

Ronnie
Wonderful to hear Desi Friel and his songs.

David Agnew
Great Polyjesters show - you were right.

Mickey
Really enjoyed hearing The Polyjesters playing live on The Drift. Thanks for another great show.

Lyle
Phil plays seriously good folk roots. I listen to him each week from Grand Island, NE USA. I like his Englishshe jokes and wit. My Englishshe grand dad comes from London; Shepperd. Lyle

George Taylor
Listen again with Phil Brown on the Drift is a must each week. Good on the BBC for keeping an old Lank down in NZ happy

Jake Blackpool North
Good banter with Shep Woolley, still as funny as ever. Listen each week, keep it up.

Millie, Blackburn
Excellent programme with Ian Alveston last week. There should be more of these type of "roots" progs. It's a shame that the time of the programme has changed to 9 pm.Keep up the good work

Ian Storey
Just caught your Listen Again feature on Edwina Hayes, she is excellent and must catch her live.Ian & Maggie Storey.

David Higginson
Thanks for a great show last week! I love the Drift Live and Daft! Dylan Owen is just the man to bring it all alive! Dylan's songs are hilarious and clever. They put the fun back in folk!To see Dylan live is to see a really unique performer. For me he blends the best of old-fashioned music hall and the sharpness of good stand up comedy with brilliant guitar playing. Having seen Dylan perform live loads of times he never fails to make be laugh. And like a true trubadour he never does anything the same way twice - he re-writes songs on the hoof in response to the audience reaction - magic! Let's have more of him on the Drift.

Philip Bradshaw
Phil, I thought Dylan Owen's humorous programme was carefully put together. An excellent balance between his own songs and those of singers who have inspired him-ranging from George Formby to Jake Thakray. Forty years ago I remember Pendle Folk often included Rawtenstall Annual Fair. thanks for the memory. I have seen dylan perform 4 times and have bought some of his CDs. I suggest Dave tries "The Fallen of the Day" or Whinney Hill" if he doesn't like Dylan's humour. I fail to see how Caravanning or Don't Do It Derek could be called 'btbs toilet humour'.

Dave Grimshaw
Sorry Phil but how can you call Dylan Owens Music FolkI like him and he is a very talented guitar player. But his behind the bike shed toilet humor and songs are awfull.

George & Alice
PhilThanks for repeating the John Wright programme. It was great to hear John talking about his life and career. We listened on Thursday & Sunday. Still find it hard to believe that he has passed away. What a loss. George & Alice.

Maura, Standish
I saw John Wright at our local folk club some years ago now. My family and I thought that the special drift programme on his life was really moving.

Geoff
John Wright will be sadly missed. Moving story Phil, well done.

Dave & Mary Shaw
Mary and Dave here from sunny Fleetwood. Thank you so much for your lovely John Wright tribute broadcast on The Drift. All of us at the club (The Clarence Blackpool) were devastated when her heard of John's death. It was so typical of John to donate his organs. Ann Green has organised a JW Band gig for the autumn.See you at the Fylde - keep well.Dave & Mary.

Matt
Had the misfortune to hear this show on Thursday ... would hate to be stuck in a bar when this type of music is playing .. I'd drink twice as much!

Alan in Prestwich
What a nice sensitive tribute to John Wright on The Drift Thurs 27 March. How nice to hear the words and music of a dearly missed artist - may God Bless him. Thank you Phil for featuring this tribute to John.

Penny Black
Hi Phil - didn't manage to catch The Drift Live but just got back and listened to Net Replay. Many thanks for the Plug for the Plough ARC gig with JIVA on the 26th - we'll let you know how it went. We're "In negotiations" with OSSY Mills to run regular events there during the season for ARC and already have several "Well Known" Acts onboard so all being well it will be a good "do" for Traditional, Lancashire music plus raise some cash for ARC.thanks again for all your help,Pete & John (Penny Black)

Doug & Sue Muir
Valentine's Day was very emotional as along with Pete Gregor Boreland we were also at John Wright's funeral. I thought Pete and Gregor's performance on your show was magic. How they managed it after the day they had just had I don't know. Well done to them and many thanks for having them on and playing such wonderful music. Keep up the good work and keep music liveCheersDoug and Sue Muir

Dave in Ormskirk
Really enjoy the Drift. It's great that Radio Lancs continues to support folk and roots music. (Not sure about the new later slot, though: I fear that coming after an unrelated specialist programme is probably going to hurt audience figures. Hope they don't think that's anything other than the scheduler's fault.)

Dermot in Cleveleys
Just a line to say how impressed I was with the live show on the 20th. Good choice of artists and it sounded great. Keep it up and let's have more.

Alex from Leeds
Great show Phil, fantastic music. Particularly liked the clip of the comment over the tannoy on this week's show. A request to play more Mabon please.

Bridie Sutton
I really enjoyed last weeks radio programme.I found the one about the telephone very amusing.I have experienced those same difficulties. I would like a repeat of the said record, also that disc no.Thank you.

Sean
Play more Cara Dylan!

John Whittaker
Great show Phil, so good to know that folk mix at Accrington Town Hall is starting up again. How wonderful it is to hear that the Battlefield Band are coming back again.

Geoff from Preston
As Peggy is from Farnworth so she should be listening to GMR, they don’t have a folk music show. In Lancashire we have The Drift and it’s not dire!

peggy in farnworth
get phil brown replaced hes dire

Andrew in Southport
Excellent show with great music well presented. Precisely the sort of thing BBC local radio should be doing. Keep up the good work, Phil and Radio Lancs

Ray Downes
I listen to The Drift on line here in Fremantle, West Australia every week. One of the best folk programmes ontwireless. Sensible, non patronizing presentation of a cracking mix of folk. Love the banter and interplay between Phil and Sham.Goodonya fellas.

Neil
I got my Ephy Clarke CD from Amazon

Carol
Where can you buy the album with that song on?

Neil (Chester) originally from Kirkham
In recent weeks I have heard you twice play Ephrim Clark's song about Morecambe Bay. What a touching song and looking forward to hearing more. Keep it up Phil and Sham.

Ken Southworth
Depressing? He probably can't listen much last weeks Ian McMillan show was a gas

Mike, Blackburn
Listening to The Drift gives me a lift but maybe Jamie would get one too if he moved to Upper Darwen

jamie from lower darwen
if you want to feel down, listen to phil brown- the most depressing programme on radio

Pauline Q
A consistent and well prepared show. Not much to touch it (of it's type) nationally

Jenny from Adlington.
Good to have the Sunday repeat back. Loved the daft stuff the the Radio 3 Verb man.

lindsey from Salwick
i agree with Mike, Keith Fletcher should be on longer and get rid of the folk stuff

jenny in fulwood

Mariano Mutton, from Italy
