Nick Dow

Nick presents Lancashire Blue Notes - blues news and reviews from right across the county...

Nick Dow is a virtuoso guitarist. Nick spent many years playing acoustic blues guitar in the clubs round London. He did his fist blues gig at age fifteen. In the late sixties Nick moved in to Folk Music, bringing the same technical excellence to his repertoire, and making five LP.s

His fine singing and guitar playing have taken him round the world, touring Finland, Sweden, the East coast of America from Boston to Tennessee. If you were to throw a dart at a map of the British Isles the odds are where ever it lands - unless it’s in the middle of a river! - Nick will have performed there; even then he will probably have entertained on a boat that crosses it.

After a serious illness, Nick stopped touring, and returned to his roots with the Blues. Much to his surprise The Nick Dow Blues Band took off in leaps and bounds and from the desire to do a few local gigs came festival work T.V. work and his own Radio Show on BBC Radio Lancashire ‘The Lancashire Bluenotes’.

Cheers for the Man Gone Missing track on Friday, Nick. My wife was amused that you felt it too laid-back (wonder why?)...I really enjoyed it nonetheless, please play some more. And more Peter Green too, like Colin I was loving those rare tracks you played. Thanks for a great show.

Colin
Thanks for playing the rare Peter Green tracks on last weeks program. Recently saw a Peter Green / Nigel Watson DVD (their latest release) and was most disappointed that most of the lead guitar is in fact played by Nigel and Peter only plays rhythm on all or the majority of tracks incl Black Magic Woman - is Peter ill OR can't he play lead anymore ?

Robert Kemp
Hi Nick, when are you going to play some blues again from Toni Spearman,i just saw her show in Vienna, great Rock Blues, if you have So Called Friends, please.

Ross Millan
Did you find out any more about the Man Gone Missing? I really liked the songs, powerful stuff, & it'd be really nice to hear some more. Maybe get him in for a live session if you find out who he is?

Just seen a young girl from Liverpool by the name of Delta Maid playing some great self penned country blues on acoustic guitar at a gig in Oldham. Well worth your attention. If you go to www.myspace.com/deltamaid you'll find she's pretty nifty on the keyboard too.

Hi, I'm an ex. Lancastrian bass player exiled in Peterborough, I'm currently listening to last Friday's Lancashire Blue Notes broadcast by Nick Dow. This is a great programme and I listen to it weekly via the net. I have E mailed the following question several times but have never had an answer: is it possible to have a play list posted on the Blues Note site following the programme as it is not always possible to catch the songs that Nick plays. Apart from that a brilliant programme

Alec Martin

Great show, Nick, pity you have to have play so many jingles and trailers in the programme - but that's not your fault. How about something from the late and great Champion Jack Dupree who I met at the old Accrington Stanley Jazz club many moons ago? A real gentleman.

Had the pleasure of seeing a gig at Ribble Valley Jazz and Blues Club in Clitheroe last night. Despite some sound problems, we were treated to Lucy Zirins, Graham Robinson and the wonderful Oli Brown Band. Catch them if you can. Yes I am biased - Lucy is my daughter, but the mix on the night of slide (Lucy), Picking and Ragtime (Graham) and electric (oli) made it a truly pleasureable evening.More, more, more

Colin
Excellent Robert J tribute show thanks very much Nick, can we have one on Elmore James and the other blues legends ?

Paul from Sweden
Thanks to the internet, I am now a regular listener - Great show Nick! And many thanks to you, for featuring our band Birchwood Mountain Delta and "Blues Is My Baby" last Friday. Not only does your show have great music but it gives great support and encouragement to local bands and musicians - and semi-local bands like us being half in Cheadle and half in Björkeberga Sweden. Work that one out!Hope to come over and play some local Lancashire venues next year. All the best,Paul Phillips

Martin Byrom has spotted a phenomonal new talent - at last some good news coming out of Burnley. Check LUCY ZIRINS out, she is wicked. She's just been to a week of slide guitar lessons with Michal Messer at EuroBlues 2008 and has a few gigs on the fringe at Colne this weekend
