Bernard Aspinwall, West Kilbride Scotland
Tom Finney undoubtedly, saw him from 1946 to 1960 from St Georges Road. His finest goal against Hull City at Deepdale in Div II. Like so many great PNE players he often walked to the ground. Let's remember the great entertainer Bobby Beattie, always played with a smile and at his own pace; Charlie Wayman, the best centre forward we ever had with Alex Dawson a wee bit behind; Tommy Thompson the best inside forward finisher; Jack Fairbrother, Fred Else (never forgot his game v Man U at Old Trafford in win when Hatsell scored from the halfway line!) and Kelly the best keepers; Joe Marston, the best centre half PNE has had; Shanks and Docherty, tough but constructive lads; Willie Forbes, clever, tough and a scorer at times. Or remember the unfortunate Andy McLaren, Gil Lambert and Ashworth whose promising careers were blighted by injury. Those were the days. But credit to the present team for success beyond my wildest dreams this season.

Dave Brooman ( Inverness)
Saw & admired Sir Tom but played with George Ross at school so will vote for him, surely the best player never to play for Scotland.

John Regan
I never had the privilege of seeing Sir Tom. In my time Alex Dawson was the one. He had Gary Sprake of Leeds running scared everytime we played them. What a header of the ball he was. Great to see him at Deepdale a couple of weeks ago.

vinnie livingstone
tom finney was the greatest ever north ender

Jordan Wilson and Dan Priest
We never saw tom finney play at deepdale as we are only 15 but the stories been told off my grandad sounds like he was unbelivable.

Sally Wareing
Sir Tom, need I say more.

Brian Wood
As a young lad, seeing the 'gigantic' (to me anyway)figure of the Black Prince, Alex Dawson on the pitch was an awesome sight. His heading was unbelievable, like a bullet! He was probably one of the last of the 'old' centre forwards, hard as nails, strong on the ground and in the air. I remember plucking up courage to ask for his autograph outside the old players entrance on Lowthorpe Road. There he was, with Howard Kendall, George Ross and I think Brian Godfrey, leaning against the wall. My older brother urged me forward as I tentatively asked the great man for his signature. He looked more terryfying close up!! With that famous scar running down his face (which my Dad told me he got in a match against Liverpool). But what a kind soft spoken man he was a he said, certainly son, signed his name and passed my book to the others. The Black Prince has given me many memories and I can't thank him enough for increasing my love of the beautiful game.

allen l
Never saw the 'Preston Plumber', but glad to see Alec Dawson is remembered. Must dig out my press cuttings of the 'Black Prince' Dirty old 'Nobby' had to hack him down in the 5th ? round of the cup in (oh my God) must dig out the programme. PNE, Huddersfield and Leeds, one day, once more.

Brian Gavaghan

SIR TOM FINNEY.NOT ONLY THE BEST AT DEEPDALE BUT IN HIS TIME PROBABLY THE BEST IN THE WORLD.WHY?.HESCORED 30 GOALS IN 78 INTERNATIONAL MATCHES AND HE DID NOT PLAY AGAINST SAN MARINO,ICELAND, OR ANY OF THE EUROPEAN MINNOWS,WHOM OWEN,LINEKER AND THE LIKE HAD THEIR FILL. HE HAD THE REMARKABLE RECORD OF SCORING PENALTIES FOR ENGLAND ONE WITH HIS RIGHT FOOT AND ONE WITH HIS LEFT FOOT.HE PLAYED IN THREE POSITIONS FOR ENGLAND,FOUR IF YOU INCLUDE A STINT AT INSIDE RIGHT WHEN ENGLAND WERE REDUCED TO TEN MEN.COMPETELY TWO FOOTED AND A GREAT HEADER OF THE BALL.NO-ONE COULD JUMP HIGHER.YOU'LL NEVER SEE HIS LIKE AGAIN.

Sir Tom Finney is the greatest ever Northender.I was born at 2 St.Micheals Rd in June 1928 and I know Sir Tom as a young boy lived at number 21. I was lucky to see one of Northends finest displays, the 7-4 win against Derby Sir Tom was just sheer majic in a very good team captained by Bill Shankly. Frank Dunne

Al
Steve Woods in goal, holmes right back, sharp left back, nebbeling and squires in defense, kevin magee and neil trebble on the wings with greg challenor in midfield; simon burton, grahame lancashire and mark sale up front. what a team!! take your pick of who is the best

Kath Caunce
Definitely Sir Tom, I and all my family had a season ticket and went to every home game.A gentleman on the pitch- woe betide anyone who fouled him! They got the wrath of the PNE fans.

I remember watching Sir Tom Finney, but I was only 12 when played his last game. I remember it clearly because at the full time whistle I was standing on the cinders at the Kop End and caught the match ball. Everyone said take it home, but being rather naive I took it back to the trainer.Since then the greatest Northender for me has to be Alex Dawson, The Black Prince. He would have murdered today's defenders!

Preston (ian)
brilliant towards the club scored about 180 in about 430 thats a brilliant score for a left midfeilder thats why he played for england

Alan
Can we have a vote on second best ever North Ender as this is just such a walkover for our Sir Tom ... I think mine for 2nd would be Alan Kelly (brilliant goalkeeper), or maybe big Alex Dawson (I loved the way he put the goaly and the ball in very back of the net - proper footy.

Alan
Tom Finney is the best ever North Ender and the best ever England player - by a mile. Always a gentleman and he always spoke to fans as an equal, although all knew he was far greater then anyone in Preston - all knew and accepted this except Sir Tom. Look at the big heads today - Tom Finney had far more skill and was and always will be a much respected modest man. He should have been crowned King of England long ago.

Arthur MacDougall
No player will ever achieve the status of Tom Finney. I speak from personal experience having had the great pleasure of watching him from the Wartime Cup Final at Blackburn to his last league match at Deepdale. The greatest Northender? its a non contest - Sir Tom is the greatest player full stop!!

andy
tom finney was the best easily but it does help with him being my great great uncle

H. Miller, Norwich
North End has had some great players: Alex James, Bobbie Beatie (who remembers him?),Bill Shankley, Tommy Docherty but the greatest of them all: Sir Tom. I tell people these days that the likes of Beckham, etc. are not fit to lace Sir Tom's boots! He was, in my opinion the greatest player ever to don a pair of football boots. When I tell my son (a Norwich City supporter) how good Sir Tom was he refuses to believe it!!

michael a

Graham Leslie
Some people ask how the current crop of North End players compare with Sir Tom finney. I would have to concede that they run him very close but you must bear in mind that Sir Tom is 84.

william mercer
sadley i was born to late to see the ledgend sir tom finney.my dad told me he would charge down the wing with the usual three defenders round him and because his feet were so fast the defenders didnt realise he didnt even have the ball.

tom taylor
ton finney, no doubt

Les Dickinson, Now Scotland
Sir Tom made everybody round him look good.Who else could send a whole defence moving the wrong way with a body swerve not even Stan the man could do that and for goal scoring what a partnership when wee Charlie Wayman was at c/forward. I recall Shanks saying Besty wasnae fit to lace Tom,s boots so there you have it.

Andy
Tom Finney, greatest ever England player, never mind greatest ever Northender!

Nick

Jim Slater
Absolutely no-one else is in the frame. By a large margin, the greatest English player ever. I count it a priviledge to have seen him play.

Dave Butterworth
The greatest player pf his era. A model professional and a model to everyone in terms of his humility and compassion.

Roy Ryan Cape Town
Sir Tom was the greatest footballer of all time just ask Tommy Docherty

Simon
As an 8 year old I cried when Bobby Charlton left the club, I was on my holidays in Cornwall and heard it on the radio. While I guess he was my hero, there really is only one true Deepdale legend. The fellow with the plumbing company. When, not if, they reach the top flight again, I will make a special trip from my home in the US to see them play.....and all that from a rugby man.

lee

vee wilson morris
No matter how famous Tom Finney became he never forgot his roots, is always happy to talk to anyone, and always ready to support those not as fortunate as himself. Our young football "stars" could learn a lot from this man not only for his ability with the ball, in all his years of playing he was never booked and remains a gentleman both on and off the playing field

Andy, Preston
Well there is only one statue pride of place outside Deepdale far as I'm aware.

Sam hodgson
I saw Sir Tom Finney play against the famous Busby Babes we lost 2-3 it was a game I will never forget I was only 12years old

lEE TURNBULL
WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BOLD EAGLE ANDY SAVILLE

frank wilson
tom finney-no one before or since compares

Simon
Sir Tom Finney obviously, but I would like to mention Alan Kelly

Andrew.
I'm too young to have seen Finney play, (I'm 50)but brought up in Preston, as all my family are Rovers fans (like me) we have had some great players at Ewood, but PNE had someone special, proud Prestonians always called him 'Sir Tom' way before his Knighthood, and I think he was the greatest player to grace any football ground, Ronnie Clayton said he was the best, Bryan Douglas told me the same, in this over-rated market how much for Finney? money could not buy him, he is simply a living legend, PNE these days may not be the team they once was but they can be content knowing that they had the greatest English footballer that has ever lived.

Maxwell-Belgie
Wasn't Finney in glorious England side dumped out of World Cup by America? Greatest player for P.N.E....Shankly. Put football first all his life. Never lived on his past.

Lisa Seed - Hampshire
There is only one person that it could be....Sir Tom Finney!.

Ian
Sir Tom by a mile but Ernie Hannigan for 2 seasons was the trickist right winger I have seen in a long time

Eric Wilkinson Melbourne Australia
There has not been a more loyal and cleaner player than Sir Tom Finney never lost is cool and left defenders in his wake

ALex
Theres only one Tom Finney Tom finney (season ticket holder on the Shankley)

Jim
Tom Finney - a great player and a gentleman. The 8-0 win against Birmingham was in the 1957-58 season and I saw the game! I think it was about a week before the Munich air disaster (Man Utd)

PNE PNE
This question is easy it has to be the Great man SIR TOM FINNEY

Mike Larcey
Saw Sir Tom rip Birmingham apart 8 - 0. Can't remember the year. There have been other legends: Joe McCall, the guy that went to Arsenal who claim he is one of their all time greats, Tom Doc, Cowboy Cunningham. Quite a gallery over the years. Hopefully, new giantsw of the game will grace the historical turf.

WONNY
SIR TOM,TOP MAN

mark royle
How do i get triles for my son at north end he was scouted two yours ago scoreing from a corner he is bigger and better now

Roy Prescott
Sir Tom by a mile. No contest......

Richard Elwell
There surely is no contest is there? Sir Tom Finney must be the greatest player ever to pull on a PNE shirt. Two footed, he played in every position in the forward line. Never booked let alone sent off, in fact the ref never even spoke to him on the field. But the final judge must be his fellow professionals, and both Bill Shankly and Tommy Docherty who played behind him for PNE said he was the best they had ever seen.

eileen
