Have Your Say

Who's the greatest?

The BBC reserves the right to edit comments submitted.

Dan Lawrenson
Tony Green, no doubt! He was a teacher at my high school, true ledge :)

Mike McCormack
Tony Green, I can see him, running from his own half now beating 5 players and slotting the ball in the net. Football poetry in motion.

roy gratrix
best eva my bst mates grandad what a man

Steve Bartley
Alan Suddick. I can picture him now as if it was yesterday. From my place by the wall next to the away team dugout in the centre paddock, crouching down in front of the defensive wall so the goalkeeper couldn't see him and then bending the ball over the wall into the top corner of the net at the Kop end. He was creative, exciting, brilliant, entertaining and a legend.

Megan Hassan
my mums uncle jackie mudie was the greatest x

Tav Falco
Alan Suddick, by a country mile. He only bothered for20 minutes in a match, but when he did he could destroy the opposition. Bend it Like Suddick! His goal against Verona was outstanding - from a throw in the ball didn't touch the ground, chipping it & heading it past 2 Verona players on the way to the back of the onion bag. The King. Don't die Sudds.

alan moore
Alan Suddick was our best player in my lifetime...a great creative midfielder who would be worth millions today...

karen perry
bill perry might have been one of the best blackpool football players of old times, but he was also the best dad anyone could wish 2 have he was a great family man and had a heart of gold i could could rap him around my little finger till i got wot i wanted. he had a g.s.o.h.and a heart of gold. and i miss him so very much. r.i.p from your ever loving daughter karen. xx

David Almond
I can remember Dave Windridge scoring an F.A Cup goal against Man City at Maine Road. With all the money in the game now, he would easily have been signed by a top side in the Premiership today!

David Russell
My great uncle Jackie Mudie was the greatest. As Stanley Matthews said about Mudie "His skill and work for others often made some of us look better than we really were"

Paul McAweney
For sheer exitement,Tony Green, for the unorthadox Hutchy, for sportsmanship and example Jimmy Armfield and for total charisma, skill and class Suddick. The best control/look and pass player Ive ever seen.

ami
russell coughlin

Alan Moore
We've had so many great players but Suddick surely was the one. He would go missing in a game and then suddenly do something dramatic. Those sort of players could be called luxury players but if your team is a luxury team, you need them. Greatest goal? Against Verona (Anglo-Italian Cup) 1971. The goal froma throw-in that never touched the ground before nestling in the net. Genius.

Dave Windridge
Pure Class

Percy Clarke
Matthews a legend and a gentleman but in my opinion the greatest player by far - Tony GREEN.

magic man
Sir Stan was the best and Junior Bent the mosr dire

David Ormond
Sir Stanley Matthews is the best ever player he he was in our team now we would be in the champions league.

adam
caspas gorkks is the best defender

KEN SMITH aMBLE
I was lucky enough to see Mortensen in his heyday. I suppose the term 'quicksilver' could well apply to his bursts of speed - once on his way there was no stopping him. His courage in putting himself into where it hurt was legendary, especially as his had a steel plate in his head due to an crash during his wartime service. This guy was no prima-donna. How many of today's stars can fit into that category?

Sir Stanley Matthews
There really shouldn't be a question mark over who Blackpool's greatest ever player is. However, I would imagine that Jimmy Armfield would win the prize of most loyal, fan's favourite, best all-round 'good egg'.

derek St Annes
Russell Coughlin was the best player to wear the famous tangerine. His penalty kick at Bolton was out of this world. They should name the new South Stand after him. 'The Russell Coughlin stand', kinda has a ring to it....

Lucy Mudie
JACKIE MUDIE the greatest player in the world!

Dave Hogarth
Tony Green and Stanley Matthews pure genius

Kelvin Kipper (France)
it has to be the one and only Tony Ellis

Jake Welsh
Without a doubt Alan Ball or Jim Hamleton.

ken.carter
Harry Johnstone the greatest leader blackpool ever had

don hargreaves
the Blackpool team of the late 40's/early 50's was the finest ever to represent the Club. Full of Internationals with the 'Maestro', Morty and Harry Johnstone leading the way.

Paris
My Cousin Leam Richardson has to be the best x x

Schubert
I started watching Blackpool in 1972 and the players who have stood out during the 4 decades are Alan Suddick and Mickey Walsh from the 70's, in the 80's Paul Stewart and Alex Dyer, the 90's Brett Ormarod and Clarke Carlisle and the present team every man jack of them, we are exciting to watch again.

bernard
luton fan-watched blackpool when living in lytham-suddick no contest!!

Gary Cairns
Well, the mighty pool are back in the 2nd tier of English soccer after 29 years. The name of the game this season is to survive. memories of the late 60's and early 70's are flooding back. Tony Green, Fred Pickering, tommy Hutchison...all heroes. WE ARE BACK!!!

Mobit

Sascha
Jimmy ArmfieldCaaptain of England

james
Shaun barker

Aleksandra
I agree with most of you the best ever is so hard to pick from through the years and times and styles of play the list can go on and on and on.But one thing we have forgotten Bloomfield Road who has hosted all the Pool ledgends its a true and legendery place and it is still standing for the new legends to blossom. One Pool legend the guy who won the 53 shirt BRADY and the one and only Stan "THE MAN" Mortensen.

Alan Ball
Alan Ball than Jimmy armfield,Why because they both played a part in the England set up in the 1966 world cup win.Tony Green a good player yes but best Blackpool player, not when you have E. Hughes who went on to win European honours with Liverpool & then Sir S.Mathews Monty & lets not forget one of the greatest goalies ever John Buridge.

Ratter Tat Tat
Keigan Parker ... de, de, de, de ... I'm too young to remember Jimmy but I know what a legend he is ... and one of the great gentlemen of the game

Steve Jenkinson
Jimmy Hampson - 247 goals in 360 games and cost the club £2000!!!!

George Wood, Jimmy Armfield, Alan Wright, Alan Ball, Glyn James, Emlyn Hughes, Sir Stanley Matthews, Alan Suddick, Morty, Bob Hatton, Ernie Taylor, Subs; Mickey Walsh Tony Green. My dream team!

Ken Hughes Poulton
Alan Suddick

Ash Moreau
Got Too Be Sir Stanley Matthews Or Jimmy Armfield !!

John Morrell
The late Sir Stanley - with a little help from the likes of Morty - wrote Blackpool FCs name into the history books as one of the most entertaining sides in the country. Appropriately, the resort of Blackpool was also at the table top in terms of theatrical entertainment too. After his incredible run with Blackpool, three FA Cup Finals from 1948-51, Sir Stanley returned to Stoke in the 60s and gave that ailing club the kiss of life too. It's gotta be Sir Stanley!

vicky
Richard Wellens

theflyingplumber
Without getting into the who was best debate, as a PNE fan, it would have to be Sir Stan, the Pool have had some great players(i have seen most) from defence, midfield and attack, But for his undoubted skills and contribution to the teams results,Stan was in a class of his own.One of the most difficult things is attempting to describe how good a player was to those to young to have seen him play, all I will say is that whatever you are told about Mathews(or Finney) it is a fact, and not been exaggerated one iota.

Joe Wilkins
Three candidates: Sir Stanley Matthews, Alan Ball and Tony Green. I saw them all play and the best player - Tony Green

Mike kenyon , Brisbane Australia
Jimmy Armfield One of the true legends and a real nice guy

anthony john ledwith

Garry Sudell
Although Mortensen was my favorite player Matthews was undoubtedly the best-in the world EVER!I started supporting them in 1947 - saw all 3 cup finals and continued to watch them until I left England in 1969. UP THE 'POOL !

Dan Lawrenson
TONY GREEN

Roy Hupton
Very hard to say at least 6 names come to mind Mtthews, Morty,Sudick, Armfield but my favourite by far was Tony Green and i had the great honour to meet him what a gent and very interesting to talk to unlike some of these over paid premiership players

Sam
I think the greatest player is Sir Stanley Matthew.Great player.all of the guys r amazingcheers 4 all u did

Jimmy Armfield
World'sgreatest attacking fullback and the most loyal superstar that pool ever had. He remained a true gentleman on and off the pitch.

Doreen Holtermann
He has been a force in football for 50 or more years. Never a dirty player, always a gentleman, he was committed to Blackpool during the whole of his career. He must be the greatest.

liam houston
the best players ive ever seen r hoolihan and tony ellis

Roger
Matthews was absolutely brilliant. Morteson, Ball, Walsh, Hutchinson, Suddick. A match at Bloomfield Road, then down to the Mecca for a look at the birds!!!!!!!!

Ted
Kevin Sheedy and Chris Malkin by far the best players that produced absolutely NOTHING!Seriously though, my best player to grace a Tangerine shirt would be David Eyres and he went on to prove his worth with the other clubs he played for and into his 40's - well done.

darren harvey
got 2b trev sinclair

Tony Whalley in San Diego
I started watching the Pool when I was about nine in 1944. We had many players from other teams then during the war. I used to go by myself, every weekend,Central League games as well. Imagine letting your kid do that these days. Stanley Matthews, Stan Mortenson and Harry Johnston had to be in a class by themselves. Sir Stan hardly ever got his shorts dirty even on the muddiest of days. Harry could throw in the ball over to the far post where Morty would head it in. Sir Stan hardly ever headed the ball himself, but he sure made fools of other opposition players four and five at a time. I went to school with Owen Oysten, never thought he would end up owning the team.

Paul Burnell
Best Pool player I've ever soon - no contest Tony Green. Obviously the best ever Sir Stan.

Colin Hendry
John doolan, what a player he is. a living legend.

SKROTSKI
Alan Suddick.........THe King of Bloomfield Road.

Terry Robinson
What about Mickey Burns? Pity Tony Green isn't Ben Lancasters English Punctuation Teacher !!! ... Mick of Fleetwood were you on Oceana at Christmas / New Year ?

Billy Halliday 1955
Tony Green very much like Wes Hoolahan.remember jimmy armfield once saying "if were getting leg weary, wed give the ball to tony green" is Hoolahan the new Tony Green ??any thoughts?

Steve Coughlan
Micky Walsh-the brilliant goal he scored against Sunderland that won him Goal of the Season on Match of the Day-and what about John Burridge with that penalty save in the same game....Gordon West fantastic shot stopper

Bob Kneale
In my time - Alan Suddick "The King"

Don Quey Lasher
Jimmy HampsonJock DoddsTony GreenAlan BallRoy GratrixMORTY Jimmy Armfield

stephen hardman
Alan Ball proved that he was best by being part of the team that won the World Cup.I watched him at Blackpool, and he was incredible.

David Bradbury
It has to be Tony Green......then again perhaps Alan Ball, Stanley Mathews or Alan Suddick. Could be Tommy Hutchison or Jimmy Armfield. What about Jimmy Hampson? Or Captain fantastic Harry Johnston. However it could be Stan Mortenson. What can I say..perhaps everyone who has ever played for the great club. The current team are 11 heroes.

Peter Bates
Alan Suddick, Stan Matthews, Mortenson, Armfield, Tony Green, Emlyn Hughes, Alan Ball & Enrnie Taylor saw them all - Everyone would make England team - most did.

best player ive seen has to be brett. u have to say that stanley matthews is the best player. but the greatest has to be jimmy armfield for loyalty as well as being an fantastic international.

gary cairns blackpool
The team of the late 60's and early 70's were all hero's for me. All fantastic memories I will never forget. I remember going to Old Trafford and being filled with Awe at the sight of the ground. I remember nearly winning at the fortress anfield, it ended all square. Being outplayed and outclassed at Maine Road by Francis Lee, Colin Bell & co. Losing to Chelsea at home after being in the lead 3-0 at half time. Beating Arsenal 3-2 in the fa cup after being 2-0 down at half time. Losing to Lowly Mansfield town at home in the next round. Life was tough being a Blackpool fan in those days, it seems nothing has changed....But the memories will live forever.

Slogan
Jock Dodds Stars of today, will soon have gone by stars of the past, are stars in the sky shining through time, if our hero was here The Mighty Jock Dodds, would be Player of the Year There was Matthews and Morty, when legends were seen there was Hampson and Doherty, Suddick and Green there was Perry and Mudie, against all the odds but the greatest of all, was The Mighty Jock Dodds

Gary Cairns
I am too young to have seen Matthews ect. Fred Pickering is my favourite. I was lucky enough to be there the night he scored his famous Hat Trick at Preston on that memorable night in 1969 to take the pool up to the first division. Remember the song, Oh Freddy Freddy, Freddy Freddy Freddy Freddy Pick-ering.....Harry Thompson in goal, Hutch doing his dribbling, The Suddick bender...Fantastic memories

Michael/ London
So many to choose from. Mathews, Morty, Johnson, Dodds, Hampson, Armfield, Green,?????

Mike hillm
Hoola hoola han

Glyn James
A great Captain and a solid consistant player

Martin Thomas
Alan Suddick and Dave Bamber

Paul Sloane
I was lucky enough to see Tony Green, Jimmy Armfield, Alan Ball and Emlyn Hughes. All were great players. If I had to choose one it would be Alan Ball.

Peter, Blackpool
Tony Green was the most exciting player I ever saw pull on a Blackpool shirt, closely followed by Alan Suddick who was at times a magician with the ball.

george farrow
one of the finest uncapped wing halves of his era

Mick/ fleetwood
Alan Suddick for me,and had the honour of being his butcher boy.

derek in oz
left the pool in 57 and my hero was "morty"

Barry Dyson
Tony Green. Mesmerising dribbler, bullet shot, unselfish, oozed skill and gave his all in every game. You can keep your Robbens and Rooneys. This lad was pure class. Hansen would run out of superlatives to describe him. It was a sad day for us all when his career came to a premature end.

Mike Parker
It's got to be Sir Stanley Matthews, our most famous player of all.

Megan Hassan
My mums uncle , John "Jackie" Mudie

Bernard Mayor
A few years ago while waiting for a train I got talking to a Newcastle fan on his way to the Reebok. I told hm I was a Blackpool fan. He said that the best footballer he had ever seen after George Best came from Blackpool and his name was Tony Green. I wholeheartedly agreed and I have seen them all, from Matthews, Taylor, Mudie, Amfield, Charnley, Hughes, Ball, Suddick, Walsh, Etc. The absolute thrill of watching that little guy display his natural skills lives on. Ta Tony. Bernard age 62.

stephen in bristol
my vote goes to sir stanley matthews a true gentleman of football who lived for the game and had so much time for the fans only met him once an honour i'll never forget

Craig Mitchell
John Murphy

Keith in Leyland
Tommy Garrett. I used to live near him in South Shore and we walked it to the ground on match days. Imagine any of todays so called stars doing that.

Lee Knight
Who's the greatest Blackpool player ? Depends how old you are doesn't it ! I wasn't around for Matthews and Mortensen, and I was too young to know when Ball, Hughes and Charnley were here. So my "legends" start with Mickey Walsh and Alan Suddick in the mid 70's, take in Dave Bamber and Gary Briggs in the early 90's, and finish with the likes of Trevor Sinclair and Brett Ormerod in recent times. Up the Pool !!!

jack from oswaldtwistle
my relation was on a plane coming from south africa when he made freinds with a young man coming to play for blackpool he was bill perry his bill still around

Geoff Heaton
What about Jimmy Hampson.Impossible to name one individual as the greatest.Richard Gardner got it right with his list.

vinny coates
john craven

Luke James Gillett
Stanley Matthews and Mortenson! In my era: Brett Ormerod and Wes Hoolahan.

JIMMY ARMFIELD
ONLY PLAYED FOR THE POOL, AND WHAT A GENTLEMAN, I SEE JIMMY AND HIS GOOD WIFE FROM TIME TO TIME DUE TO MY LINE OF WORK. TO ME HE IS A SUPERSTAR. HESMO

paul smith
tony green

Stanley Mathews
He Was A Legened To Watch Best In The World I Miss Watchin Him Play Without Him Football Is Not That Exciting He Was The Great Better Than Maraddonna I Think.R.I.P.

Sean Haughton
I think it really has to be MORTY, as he has always been overshadowed by Stanley Matthews.

Steve
I think in pure football terms Tony Green was the best followed closely by Alan Suddick. The best for BFC was Jimmy Armfield. the most prolific was Morty. the most enigmatic was Sir Stan.

Ray Charnley
Brilliant Centre forward

Des Loynds
Tony Green a great Scot

ray chanley
one the greatest!

Oxon boy.
This has to be a player that has played most of his 300 plus games in the old first division and has more than 20 caps for his country. Only Armfield, Matthews and Mortensen achieved this but Jimmy's record 43 caps included 15 as captain of England!

B.WOODS
Sir Stanley was the greatest - except when the lace hit Morty's head!

kath mcgeever
tony green without a doubt

john day
without doubt my boyhood hero tony green

Gary
Though I wasnt born, I heard from many reputable sources that Stan Matthews was one of the greatest, most skilled ball controllers of any time. I did see John Burridge make some remarkable saves at a time when Pool were up there and all the other Northern Clubs pailed in comparison, oh the good old days!! maybe this year the FA Cup?

Julie Wigan
Keith Walwyn, how he never got an international call up was beyond me!!!!!!! Remember him coming on at Bristol City and scoring 2 in 10 minutes to get us a 2-1 win.....superb

Ian G.
Stan Mortensen. So brave and brilliant, both as a clubman and International.

John Roberts
Gerry Ingram!, only joking. For me it has to be Jimmy Armfield.

Malcolm(Majinka) Brocklehurst
Nobody seems to have given acclaim to Ernie Taylor, one of the greatest inside forwards of all. When he linked with Mathews it was magic to watch. Taylor could drop a ball from inside right over to the left wing to drop perfectly at Perry's feet. Oh what blissful days, but I will always remember him wandering over to the left wing when the Pool were playing Man. Utd. Little Ernie Taylor nutmegged a united player and slid through the united players legs as well. What a sad end when he drowned in New Zealand.

Ian Royal
Another Newcastle fan who must put in a shout for the legend that is TONY GREEN. As a 12/13 year old he made me realise that I had been watching mere mortals for the previous 5 years. Then a combination of Gerry Queen and other thugs at Crystal Palace followed by Newcastle United's infamous Director/Surgeon Dr Rutherford ruined his career and my dreams. Never since Tony Green has any player mesmerised fans and opponents alike.

Ben Lancaster
I think that tony green is the best player blckpool has ever had mostly because hes my maths teacher!!

tony draper-smith
tony green

Oxon boy
I agree with you Lytham Lad that Ray Charnley was one of the best. He scored 222 goals in 407 games for Blackpool. Stan Mortensen also scored 222 goals but in 354 games. (It was Mortensen the manager who transfered Charnley to Preston in 1967!) From 1950 to the middle sixties we had Mortensen, then Jackie Mudie and then Charnley wearing the number 9 shirt for Blackpool. All three were great players but Charnley scored his goals in a struggling side.

Lytham Lad
No one has yet singled out the great Ray Charnley..what a phenomenal scoring rate he had around a goal every two games... over 600 games for Blackpool. What price for that now in the modern Premiership?

Paul Turner
Jimmy Armfield Captin and a one club man

bob sexton worcestershire
best ever tony green wizard played in the colourful team with ron brown and tom white

peter norris
a stalwart in defence, he could attack as well and as captain he commanded the highest respect. im referring to harry johnston.

Peter, Scotland
Depends on the defintion of 'greatest' but if you take into account abiity, personality and loyality it has to be Jimmy Armfield. A great footballer, ambassador, role model and sportsman.

Matt Holland + Sam Holt
Gary Brabin ! ! ! oh and Morty !!

lytham lad
Jimmy Armfield is every bit as good as modern day defenders like Gary Neville... but you must remember Jimmy is in his 70's now!

steve
tony green,fantastic skills

Dom Press
in my lifetime - Bamber, Quinn, Ellis or Ormerod. Of all time - Morty.

stan mortenson
a genuine hero, overshadowed by matthews. matthews the man who frequently did not play in away games. the star of the 53 final = morty

simon in macclesfield
eammon o keefe for his efforts in gaining promotion in 90's. morty for making history in 1953

Dave Johnson
Has to be Alan Suddick for 'that goal' in the Anglo - Italian but also a big up for wee George Wood between the sticks who went on to bigger things.

Peter Dickson
Alan Suddick This guy could bend a football before the Brizilians had even thought about it. very skillful player.

Bill hayes
Morty without a doubt the greatest.. even in the twilight of his career at lancaster city he was a pleasure to watch

GeeJ, Blackpool
Bill bentley.. only joking just though I'd give th old boy a mention. Best I saw was Tony Green, Though that Sinclare lad had potential.

Stanley Mortensen
One of the bravest no9's ever

stece hewitt
has to be Gary 'RAMBO' briggs hard as nails totaly dedicated to his team, and a total gentelman of the pitch. quoted of gary liniker 'the 1 player i use to dredd to play against' LEGEND

roy greg
stan mortenson great player terrific bloke on and off the pitch

Oxon boy
Stan Mortenson scored fifteen consecutive goals in eleven league games during the 50-51 season. He finished up with thirty in thirty six games that season and 222 goals in all for Blackpool

Charlene Zerhusen
Billy Ronson

john
rob edwards is the best. shows how far the club has progressed. we now have our own stadium as well

Andy Jacksn
Jacky Mudie - saw him score brilliant goals at Arsenal in 1958 or 59

trevor lawson
Tony Green was the most skillful player ever but what about Alan Skirton powering down the wing, truly explosive.

Ernie Sanderson
Stan Mortenson for me takes the prize for my generation, Always came up trumps when it mattered.

James J. Kay
Jimmy Hampson is without a doubt the best player ever for Blackpool, Goals scored in a struggling team at times, and still the holder of both club records which will never be beaten. I must say that I have a slight bias he was my uncle and I was named after him

VINCENT JOHNSON
fIRST GAME I SAW WAS IN 1956 WITH MATHEWS ECT.I SAT BEHIND THE GOALS I WAS 7, GEORGE FARM NODDED TO ME I HAVE BEEN A B/POOL FAN FROM THAT DAY. THE BEST I SAW WAS TONY GREEN HIS DEBUT WAS AT THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON WITH TOMMY HUTCHINSON,MORTY WAS MANAGER AND HAD FOUND THEM IN SCOTLAND AND GOT THEM FOR PEANUTS.TONY GREEN WAS THE MOST EXCITING PLAYER I EVER SAW ON A REGULAR BASIS IN THE SAME COMPANY AS DENIS LAW AND GEORGE BEST WITH ONE IMPORTANT DIFFERANCE TONY WORE TANGERENE.THANKS FOR THE MEMORY

Since I`ve been watching Pool, the best player - Andy Morrison (tough man in midfield, that`s what we need now.) "MORTY" the best ever though (that`s from my Dad.)

doug wareing

Richard Gardner
Tony Waiters. Jimmy Armfield,Roy Gratrix, Glyn James, Emlyn Hughes. Stan Matthews,Alan Ball,Tony Green,Alan Suddick. Ray Charnley,Stan Mortensen. subs George Farm,Harry Johnston, Alan Brown,Jackie Mudie, Bill Perry. This would be the greatest team that I have seen!

Tony Green
Immeasurable natural skill in incessant quantities and purest of quality

alan white
tommy white a great goel getter

Mark Brooks
My dad would say Morty.

Dave Pickering
It's a toss-up really between Jim Armfield & Stanley Matthews. It's difficult to compare except like with like. Also talking of 'Greatest Ever', how many alive today saw Jimmy Hampson, Peter Doherty etc. etc.

Alan, Bispham
We’re lucky we've got a big list of them: Ray Charnley, Jimmy Hampson, Stanley Matthews, Jimmy Armfield, Alan Suddick, Mickey Walsh, Tony Green, and more recently Brett Ormerod and I think Peter Clarke would have become a legend if he hadn’t moved to Southend..

Lanerossi Vicenza
Most exciting and most skillful - Tony Green All round - Jimmy Armfield

Stan Mortensen
Goal scoring record in top flight football for Blackpool ands England.

chis malkin

Sean
Probably Jimmy Armfield for me. Fred Pickering and Tony Ellis right up there to!!

Alan Suddick / Tony Green
Definite close call between the King and the wee Scot.

doug. Fleetwood
Tony Green sent me the wrong way,and i was only stood behind him.Morty next.

Les Dickinson
Morty was Blackpool and took it to the heights even afore Matthews appeared on the scene.Ably assisted byJohnston Shimwell Crosland Mudie & Wallace in goal.P.N.E. did not find it easy to beat those guys but usually did with Sir Tom in control.

Ken Swarbrick
Sir Stanley Matthews was one of the first mega star footballers, all that talent and skill with a ball that was like kicking a brick.

Richard Gardner
Ray Charnley scored 222 goals from 1957 to 1967.Unlike Jimmy Hampson and Stan Mortensen, these goals came in a struggling side.

Hank
Keigen Parker = GOD! EASY EASY EASY !!! 1953 FA CUP WINNERS !!

Patricia J. Latham
I think that Sir Stanley Matthews was the greatest footballer to play for Blackpool

Ace Dude 106
Jimmy Armfield of cause in fact maybe keigan parker

Frank Cleveleys
Stan Matthews in the 50's playing against Newcastle he stood by the corner flag shrugged his shoulders and 4 N'Castle players fell on their butt. What a delight to watch

Hank ---- frankie this is really me !!!
Ormerod.... what a legend !!

paul lamont
The best Blackpool player I ever saw was Tony Green, followed by Emlyn Hughes.

russell irwin
tony green

John in Texas
Tommy Hutchinson was a great player in a great side in the 70's

Andy Ellarby
When I was growing up in the late 60's / 70's, Tony Green was magic, however, there were many great players before him, Mattews, Mortensen, etc. However, I would go with Armfield for sheer loyalty.

gary
dave bamber best ever

Bobs in Cumbria
Suddick the king. Nuff said.

Chris
Mortys the man Matthews 2nd Alan Ball 3rd

David C
No doubt that the most talented ever was Alan Suddick. He could 'bend it like b......', but with either foot. Proof? He scored from free kicks in televised games in (I think)consecutive games, first with right - then with left. Oh, and he scored 'that' goal: The thousands that saw it KNOW nothing ever to touch it.

TONY SKUJA
Alan Suddick,A GREAT PLAYER WHO HAD FANTASTIC CREATIVE SKILLS.9/10***

Shaun Buckley
Kiegan Parker

paul,kent
Tony Green,Alan Suddick in that great team of the late 60`s.No-one rate Alan Taylor?-best pool keeper I`ve seen.

Tup
It's gotta be Suddick or Green. Suddick's banana benders, his unvelievable goal against Verona, and Green's solo destruction of West Ham. (Mind you, even Henry Mowbray scored that day.)

Shaun Buckley
Does anyone remember Tony Cunningham, he scored goals good too

sean,blackpool
what does Gregg of Standish know! He's just a pie eater. He obviously never saw me have trials for Blackpool boys!

john, blackpool
micky walsh never ceased to amaze.

S Buckley
Stan Mortenson

Smithy
Shaun Buckley before a toe injury robbed us of a true great. Bit suspect on the ground though

butty
John Craven...Performance in the Anglo Italian cup '71..And he scored!..Mr.100% commitment.

Alan Ball
Perpetual motion. Drove the team on and covered every blade of grass

S Buckley
I still maintain that Craig Mountford could have been one of the greatest players we ever had. If only his promising career wasn't so tragically cut short by a knee injury...and a chronic lack of talent.

Shaun Buckley
I am only 7 but my daddy said that Tony Green was well good. I have seen Keigan Parker lots of times now and i like him. He score goals good

Craig from next door but one
Mitch Cook! the way he could whip balls in at pace and be up and down the line in seconds, or more seriously Chris Malkin, the prolific striker with bags of pace and who definately warranted his price tag

Jimmy Armfield
A gentleman and sportsman. Captain of England. The first overlapping full back.

tony green
brilliant

Mounty
Tony Diamond, class

doug, 60 years fan.
Tony Green, sent me the wrong way and I was behind him in the scratching shed,

Chris - Salford
1. Eamon O'Keefe - exceptional player in a good side. 2. Colin Morris. 3. Gary BRIGGS!!! - No nonsense. 4. Dave Windridge - always gave 100%

Ben J W
I am a blackpool fan and have been all my life and I'm only 13yrs old in a few weeks. But I think that because of all the great stories and romours going around blackpool I think and know that Sir Stanley Matthews was the greatest ever player we've had but I have seen some great players. Ben J W Blackpool F.C Fan

Edwina Gillett
Jimmy Armfield

John, Perth Australia
Toss up between Morty ,Mathews and Jock Dodds.Morty told my sister he was walking down Bank Hey street when he saw Frank Swift on the other side of the road.Morty nodded G`day and Frank Swift dived through Burtons window.

Steve
Dave (la bamba) Bamber just edges those 90's midfield legends of Gouck, Brabin and Morrison

Geoff.
Stan Mortenson for his hat-trick in the 1953 cup final

h.hazlehurst
mortenson for consistency

Gary
From the mid sixties onwards the best for me has to be Tony Green, closely followed by wing wizard Tommy Hutchison..then Alan Ball !!!

Jay- Mickey Walsh
for scoring THAT goal!!!!!!!!! and his brother is my P.E teacher!!!!!

Sir Stanley Matthews
Undoubtedly THE best

Graham Brook, Queensland, Australia
Four great players spring to mind, all from the 70's. John Burridge,Bob Hatton, Alan Suddick, and finally Mickey Walsh, I can still remember standing in the scratching sheds at Bloomfield the day he scored THAT goal!

Stanley Matthews
Stanley is the greatest BFC player because we have a statue of him outside our ground also he played for England Football Club and he was the best player then.

stanley matthews
brilliant

james s
jimmy armfeild

Geoff ... now in Manchester
I'm too young to have seen Morty and Matthews but from the 70's onwards, with Jimmy Armfield, Alan Suddick and Tommy Hutchison just closely pipped at the post, I think the best player I've ever seen at Bloomfield Road has to be Tony Green!

Stephen Britain
I am too young to have seen Stanley Matthews so can't comment on him. Of the rest it has to be Tony Green by a long long way. As an exiled sand grown un I have fond memories of watching him from the kop as a young boy.

Terry McDermott
Stanley Matthews A legend throughout the world Still great at 50

jimmy melia
tommy whith great player ex crystal palace

Todd Howard
How can anyone be better than Matthews? He is a legend of the game and the Model professional of the era

Derrick Shepherd
Ithink Stan Mortensen was the best for Blackpool

Steve Fisher
Jimmy Armfield has to be the top man. Class, loyalty and a top all-round bloke.. what more could we ask for ? A true tangerine legend.

Mick
Tony Green by a mile. Can anyone else remember 8,000 turning up to watch the reserves when he came back from his achilles tendon injury?

David Todd
Jimmy Armfield - great loyalty, could have played for anyone in his day

Shaunna, Northern irelnand :D
is david beckham good anymore ?????

sam
its got to be Jimmy Armfield, maybe its time we had a statue out side the new stand for him, when thats built????????????

ERIC TURNER
HAVE WATCHED BLACKPOOL SINCE1945 THE BEST WITHOUT ANY DOUBT WAS MORTENSEN. STILL THE ONLY MAN TO SCORE A HATRICK IN A CUP FINAL AND ON GOALS TO GAMES PLAYED ENGLANDS BEST

Rob, Preston
Record signing Chris Malkin!!! Seriously though, Matthews, Mortensen, Armfield all come up there, but it has to be the Legend Mickey Walsh for THAT goal!!! Oh, and John from "Newcastle" who can manage to travel to Lostock Hall every sunday, Lostock Hall are pants!!! No good players EVER

Phil, Freck
Tony Ellis, awesome!

r ghent
jimmy hampson twice took blackpool to the first division and scored goals every time he played for england.

Mike "The Mouth" Sigel
efren reyes is the greatest pool player of all time

roy whitworth , canada
i think tony green was the best i saw , although alan ball was great , the 2 stans in the old days were great , jimmy armfield was & still is mr blackpool f.c.i missed the70's players as i emigrated in 68 & lost touch for a while , my mum sent papers through the mail in the 80's & ninety's & now with the p.c. i keep in touch , go tangers go .

Alan Suddick
The first footballer in the country to bend the ball, could do it much better than todays "footballers"

alan australia
stanly mortenson watchedhim play in a snow storm in my opinion the greatest player the pool has ever hadho happy days

Phil Corbett, Leeds
Although before my time, Stan Mortensen is a true legend at the club and well worthy of the statue honouring his memory. His goals ratio is phenomenal plus he had a genuine affection for the club and town.

Jonathan Goldberg
I have 2 Allan Ball and Tony Green

Mousey from Hambleton
Big John Murphy...living legend.

Hank!
Ormerod All The Way!

Monkey Chops.
Junior Bent was the greatest ever player for Blackpool by a mile. And he had sooo much time for the fans..

john grayson. from toronto, canada.
both armfield and waiters must rate as two of the greatest players england ever had, let alone blackpool.

Robert Scholfield
I used to watch the great Blackpool team of the fifties on the kop when I was a young lad, and I have seen all the great Blackpool players. Jimmy Armfield was without doubt the best right back I have ever seen and Morty was a great centre forward, but there is nobody who ever played for Blackpool or even England who can be compared with Stanley Matthews acknowledged by Pele as one of the worlds all time great players.

bob whiteside
emlyn hughes

Mac in India
Mortenson, matthews, armfield, suddick, ball, hughes, green, perry, hatton, SUDDICK bend it like beckham, ha, this guy was bending balls before he was born. A gent to boot as well.

aiden
Mortenson without a doubt, then bill perry often the unsung hero of blackpool. Aiden blackpool

AJ
OOOOH! TONY ELLIS! top player with top sarcasm

Rob Moran-Hetherington
Morty. No question. Matthews said it...what greater recommendation can you get?

Mike Flinn
It has to be Jimmy Armfield, local lad , one club man and captain of England; can't get much better than that can it?.

Stanley Matthews
He was a wizard, even with a heavy,, leather ball covered in mud, and facing an aggressive opponent. Magic.

Jimmy Armfied
all round servant to BFC, England captain, what more??

Julian McMahon
Stanley Matthews was Blackpool to those of us born in the 40's. Morty, Armfield and co were wonderful but Blackpool were Matthews and Matthews was Blackpool. Alan Brown would be my next choice - most unrocognised player we ever had

David Green
Got to be Tony Green

harry thomson goalkeeper
had a great season promotial season

Alan, Manitoba, Canada
Skill players: Tie between Suddick & Tony Green. Impact players: Morty and Sir Stan. Mr.Reliability; Jimmy Armfield and Peter Clarke. To Graham - I knew John Craven and his family growing up in St.Annes. Wasn't his dad's name Roly? I think John and I both played for a very strong St.Annes YMCA team, though at different times.

COLIN GOODWIN
JIMMY ARMFIELD greatest ever Blackpool fc player. He was the original overlapping full-back with an ability to put in superb crosses. He was the master of the sliding tackle that came away in possession of the ball. One other reason comes to mind...at the height of his career when he was Blackpool and England captain he turned down a move to MAN U. saying Blackpool had been good to him and he prefered to spend the remainder of his career at Bloomfield Rd.

Hywel James
Dave Bamber ... in my Uni debut we beat his Gilbert Murray side 6-2 due entirely to the fact his whole side were still drunk from the night before. Kept Leicester ni in the football spotlight for years. Good on you donkey.

Mac
Greatest player would have been Ormerod until he turned traitor, now he's just an average player in an average team.

Graham Taylor
Allan Suddick....the King....could bend a ball before it was possible.

David Wright
I'm a Newcastle fan, but after his transfer, Tony Green had a huge impact in less than one season before injury cruelly robbed us of a truly masterful player. He must surely be Blackpool's greatest ever as for his size he had it all. The only player I've seen who comes close is Peter Beardsley, and I can give no higher accolade than that.

charlotte
DECHHAM can nearly bend it likeKING ALLAN SUDDICK

Neil Watson
Has to be Alan Suddick record signing from Newcastle in 1966 who can ever forget his silky skills and his goal against Verona in 1971 when from Burridges kick out he tipped the ball over 3 players and volleyed the ball in the net just magic

Mike Collier
Jimmy Armfield was a great servant to the club and is now an even bigger servant to the Town. Jimmy is a true hero and a gentleman.

alan moore
Suddick has to be the best for me. Great diggers, skilful midfielder, remember that goal against Verona? Modern free-kicks owe a lot to Suddick though he never gets credit for it and frequent goal scorer too. Fantastic player.

ian jenkins
iam to young to remember the likes of Armfield Matthews & Mortensen.but i can remember Tony Green i cried the day we sold him to Newcastle i was 12 years old and i idolised him ,he was a fabulous player and for me he is a Blackpol great.

Pools greatest ever for me it has to be Morty as stated goals per game ratio, first and only hattrick in the cup final. And on that subject that has to be the best come back ever..forget liverpool against Milan..they had 45 mins and then pens,,look how long The Pool had in 53

Geoff in St Annes

jack rutter
brett ormerod

Steve McDonald
Tony Green was gifted beyond belief.

Stuart in Cumbria
Watched Pool for over forty years seen Armfield Suddick James Burns Green Ball Wood Sinclair Wright Walsh Craven Hutchinson Stewart and Murphy but the best has to be BURRIDGE clean sheets were his trade mark.

David Broom, Melbourne, Australia
Has to be Jimmy Armfield - played all his career at Pool, captained them and played for England. A great player and a true gentleman.

Tony Farrow
I propose Harry Johnston, skipper and a member of Blackpool's famous half back line of Farrow, Hayward, Johnston - before, during AND after the War. Captain of the side in the 1948, 1951 and 1953 Cup Finals. Truly a Blackpool legend on whom the Club's most famous manager, Joe Smith, relied on.

Adrian Whitaker
Sir Stan Matthews - He really was the master of dribble - had amazing turn of speed and the ability to cross a ball onto a 'sixpence'. Just a shame he never got play with modern day lightweight equipment. Fantastic player

Rosie
Keith Southern - the best looking player in blackpool

gregg standish
John from Newcastle. If you originate from that region of the British Isles, then you would know all about LOSERS wouldn't you?

Tony - South Shore
Too young to had seen the legends play. So for me watching a young Trevor Sinclair play right wing was always something to look forward to.

m jeffery
MORTY true great both on and off the pitch.ratio of goals , and bravery of the highest order ,armfield great player and servent

Shaun Weatherill
How we could do with Alan Suddick's creative genius or Tony Green's incisive pace and skill to get us out of our current predicament.

tony singleton
the 2 steady players from the 60's it has to be glyn james and jim armfield.

JOHN newcastle
Blackpool are the bigest bunch of losers in the football league they are by far the worst team in lancashire and i could honestly say my sunday league team AFC Lostock Hall (central lancs prem division under 18's) could beat them comfortabley

Stan Crawford, Alberta, Canada
Stan Mortensen, and of course the great Stan Matthews

Bob
Tony Green/ Tommy Hutchinson what great signings by Morty

glyn lewis
Tony Green, Alan Suddick, Tom Hutchinson all deserve a mention. Best player probably Jimmy Armfield but a close par with Mortensen

Alan Warwick
I saw most of the players mentioned, but Alan Ball kept the pool in the first division while he was there.Non stop live wire with lots of skill. Soft spot for Morty though. Unfortunatly saw less of him.

Mal Walker
1st - Stan Matthews 2nd - Alan Ball 3rd - Stan Mortenson 4th - Ernie Taylor 5th - Emlyn Hughes Others such as Jimmy Armfield,Harry Johnston, George Farm, Jackie Mudie, Bill Perry, Eddie Shimwell, Tom Garrett etc. all deserve a mention.

What about Alan Ball for your list? But although before my time film footage tells me Stanley Matthews would have to be NO.1

Noel Hudson
Tony Green was the best footballer at Blackpool FC. His individual skills made him a crowd pleaser and his temperament was exemplary.

Yes Matthews Morty Armfield but what a servant Bob Hatton was

Gregg of Standish
Best players for me Scott Taylor & Junior Bent. So good I christened my only son Scott Junior Prescott!!! Pure class ALL three of them.......

John, Creswell
Jimmy Armfield because he was a fantastic england international loyal to b.f.c all his playing career.Pity he never managed the club. Revolutionised the overlapping attacking wing back system.

JP, Thornton
Dave Bamber....only watched pool over the last 17 years so the old legends don't get nominated. Bamber had a prolific goal scoring record. despite his size he would score all sorts of goals - overhead kicks, headers, 25 yard screamers, tap ins. Never mastered penalities though, sorry dave! A legend in his own right.

Allan Armistead, Auckland
Jimmy Armfield...used to watch him in my younger days before coming to New Zealand Great player and a gentleman

Emma, Blackpool
Jimmy Armfield...is the best. Him and my dad are mates. It's brill. hi to Arnold School year 8s.

Peter, Blackpool
Stan Mortensen...he was the bravest of centre forwards, as a young boy he was my all time great hero and as I grew older I saw no reason to alter my opinion.

micky, blackpool
Andy Garner...in the 15 years his skill and hold up play was excellent good passer off the ball and scored goals.

Frank, Burnlet
Morty...he was not only a brave player especially as he had a steel plate in his head, but he knew where the goal was at any time.

Mick, St Annes
Stan Mortensen. 'Mr Blackpool', the stuff that comic book heroes are made of and a warm, funny man who did everything for the club. Not only my opinion, but Jimmy Armfield says so too.

Roy, Blackpool
Allen Browne He was years ahead of any one-else and he had his baggy shorts rolled up to look smart!

Ian Daly
Stan Mortensen Was not only a great goal-scorer, he was also a wonderful person. It was a privilege to watch him.

John Bailey
Tony Green Greatest left footer i have ever seen remember him destroying West Ham Utd single handed in 70s made sir bobby moore look silly would have been up with world greats but for injuries nice person to talk to also and very modest.

Eric Chamberlain
Morty His play in the 1953 FA Cup was brilliant, 3 goals. This is a record I doubt anyone will break. He was also a great international.

Graham, Blackpool
John Craven Blackpool captain when we won in bologna, whole hearted whether upfront, midfield or in defence and also chipped in with some quality goals.Plus was my uncle so I'm biased!

Jamie, Clitheroe
Dave Bamber Quality. He could head a ball harder than he could kick it. Prolific goal-scorer and a true pro.

Tom, Fleetwood
Bullock He was the only speed in the team and now he's gone.

Ricky, Cumbria
John Murphy Just his sheer presence has an impact on how pool play. Quality player.

Liz, Leicester
John Murphy!

Luke, Kirkham
Peter Clarke Just a amazing defender.

Derek, OR, USA
Jimmy Hampson. 246 goals scored in total for Blackpool from 1927 to his tragic death by drowning in 1938, 45 in the 1929-30 season alone.

Pete
Stan Mortensen having met stan and knowing his wife jean I am proud to say that this man was a true gent off the pitch as on it. he won the fa cup for Blackpool in 1953 if truth be known. his hat-trick to this day has not been matched. he is and always will be the greatest player for blackpool and england.

Craig, Crewe
Morty his goal ratio was amazing especially for England.

Sally, Carleton
Peter Clarke Solid at the back and always shows his appreciation to the crowd! so committed to the club and always tries 110%.

Paul, Blackpool
Eamon O'Keefe I've never seen a player have as much impact on a club as soon as he had arrived as he did!!

Jason, Blackpool
Dave Bamber Without him we would never have got out of the basement division 4 best goal-scorer we had in the early nineties.

Bish, Fleetwood
Eamon O'Keefe A short spell with the pool but who can forget the world class goals he scored a true legend.

Steve, Thornton
Jimmy Armfield I think a lot of hype is built up about some of the older players from years ago but Jimmy represents (still) everything that's good about professional footballers. IT'S JIMMY FOR ME !

Matt, Poulton
Tony Green Absolute wizard - made Bobby Moore look average.

R, Blackpool
Junior Bent

Steve, Blackpool
Tony Green The archetypal edge of the seat player and the most exciting player I ever witnessed at Bloomfield Rd. I include the likes of Best/Marsh etc in that assessment.

Blundell, Preston
Brett Ormerod An amazing player if we had him we would be straight into the championship. Imagine clarke, parker and ormerod in the same team amazing.

Ron, Cheadle
Alan Suddick Born is the king of Bloomfield Rd.Was bending a ball before Beckham was born! Great free-kick goals, excellent skills, good passer and although a bit lazy at times he was great to watch.

Bill, Fleetwood
Alan Suddick The King of Bloomfield Road. Bent it better than Beckham.

Rod, Blackpool
Stan Mortensen/Tony Green. Can't separate. Both great players, both true Gents.

Hugh, Surrey BC Canada
Morty Never seen a better centre forward. To Graham I saw your uncle John Craven play in Vanc.

Jim, Birmingham
Mortensen Never saw him play but his goal scoring record speaks for itself. Also Armfield - who I did see and is still an ambassador for the sport today. Tony Green / Alan Suddick- some amazing touches from them both and how about Tony Waiters to give the goalies a look in.

Robin, Canada
Tony Green Because of the way he moved on and off the ball and if not for injuries who knows how good he could have been.

Robin, Canada
Tony Green Because of the way he moved on and off the ball and if not for injuries who knows how good he could have been.

S Walford, Blackpool
Little Billy Ronson! Super speed.

Brian, Brisbane
Stan Mortensen The best by far even in his own era.

Michael Lebaldi
I think Tommy Hutchinson should get a mention as well as Alan Ball. Ball not as manager but a great player.

elvis hammond
gary briggs we need him to sort out the men from the boys, would have challenged once and that would take the wind out of any attacker

Alan Wilman, Kirkham
Karl Oysten - take a look in the mirror - it should be you saying, I'm packing in not Hendry. Enough is enough of being regressive - let's have somebody to take the helm who knows and who cares about Blackpool FC

A great Blackpool, Liverpool and England player was Emlyn Hughes.

Toby
