WEATHER

5th
April

1911 A ferocious easterly gale, laden with snow, led to terrible losses of lambs, fruit and potatoes in the fields to the south of Chatham and Sittinghbourne. Icicles hung from buildings in Rochester.

1580
St. Peter's Broadstairs was shaken from top to bottom by an earthquake when "the sea foamed and ships tottered". Churches of St.Peter's and St. Mary's at Sandwich were damaged. Saltwood Castle was "ruinous". Deep rifts impeded all forms of transport and a Staplehurst mail cart took nearly six hours to travel seven miles from Maidstone to Chatham.
