9th January
1979
Memories of 1947 was brought back by the heavy blizzard that power cuts, the rationing and hardships were revived. Isle of Sheppey was cut off by deep snow drifts. De-icing trains and snowplough battled all night to clear the roads.
10th January1940
Did you know that in WWII all weather reports were censored for 15 days, even when Britain shivered in the coldest spell conditions since 1895.
12th January1877Two men were killed and many injured during a landslide at Folkestone Warren,
a few days after a big storm. The slip was about 100 acres and took place at the eastern end of the Martello Tunnel, blocking the main line completely with chalk and rubble to a depth of more than 30 feet. The single line was restored on 17th March.
