31st December
1927
The Salvation Army chartered five aeroplanes to drop supplies on isolated villages. The BBC made an appeal to lay out black clothes in the snow "not less than 15 feet in diameter" to help pilots to pinpoint people in need.
1st January 1877
Margate Pier was sliced through by a storm-driven wreck that marooned 40 to 50 people. They were not rescued until the next day. .
3rd January1997Blizzards returned to East Kent and policeman caught a burglar by following his footprint in the snow.
4th January1925
The River Darent burst its bank following torrential rains and Dartford town centre - now known as "Little Venice" - was badly flooded.
5th January1857The lugger Victory was lost with her crew of nine off the coast of Margate. "How the accident happened was scarcely known to the survivors, and what really caused this usually staunch little craft to turn turtle. The sail was being lowered when a sudden squall struck them "all of a heap", filled the bulging sail with water and, in that way, brought about this most deplorable accident"
6th January1928
The Thames burst its banks and hundreds of people where homeless in the north of Kent. The disaster was caused by a combination of the thaw, following the blizzard of December 1927 and an extremely high tide.
