Romany Roots: Sarah

Cooking on an open fire

Groups of young Travellers have been working in some of the county's schools to produce material for the Voices website as well as for broadcast on BBC Radio Kent.

I am a Gypsy girl. I am fifteen years old and live in Kent. I lived in a Trailer when I was ten years old. I now live in a house but I liked the trailer better. I have long black hair and lovely brown eyes. I speak differently from the Gorgers, they say 'pardon' and I say 'what'. I like to wear gold jewellery in school and I'm not taking it off for anybody.

My grandparents are born and bred Travellers. They lived at Church Marshes in Sittingbourne. The photo above is of my great granny, her name was Sary Anne, the horse was called 'Specky' and belonged to my great granddad who was Henry. She is cooking meat pudding in an iron pot, this is how you make meat pudding:

Flour, suet, onion, meat and seasoning.

You mix the flour and suet together and roll it out, you put all the meat and onions together with gravy and tie in a cloth. You boil it for four hours but you must keep adding water.

My granny's sister has still got the kettle stick with the iron pot. My great granny Sary Anne is wearing a headscarf, they used to wear them when they went out selling the flowers that my granny used to make.

My granny used to make a camp fire with some old wood from the side near the horse and she has an old blanket behind her to sit on when the grub was done. My granny had long hair, right down to the ground.
