Title:
Baby signing
Nemone has twin girls, and since the age of 8 months they have been
going to a "sing and sign" group. Although they can't talk,
they can still communicate with their parents and each other using basic
sign language.

Sam,
it is sad that despite all the evidence to contrary, people still espouse
the myth that given sign language, children's oral development will
be delayed. So many studies are now available that disprove this. The
younger they start to communicate, the better their communication will
be, even more so with sign when they are so visual. Do you also believe
that learning a second language in Primary School retards the development
of Grammer? If so, you fly in the face of convention.

My Granddaughter started going to sing & sign when she was about
5 months old. By the time she was a year old she was corecting everyone
elses signing. She is now two years old and her vocabulary and competance
with speech in at least that of 800 words.

I took my own son Oliver to baby signing classes, and I recommend doing
it definately. Baby signing in no way delays the speech development
infact it has the opposite effect, it actually enhances and encourages
speech development. This is a well known fact! So much so that Speech
and Language therapists have approved of the Sing and Sign Programme
that I attended as well as the girls in the video! There are lots of
benefits to baby signing that gives babies that use signs a head start
in their development over their non signing peers!
The girls are lovely tho' I'm concerned that signing
delays language development. Most toddlers - girls in particular, have
circa 80-100 words by the time they are 20 months. Basic Signs are used
instictively by most parents and babies, but Toddlers should be encouraged
to use words not signs to communicate. I hope these lovely girls language
is not delayed and they will be behind their peers.
