It has also emerged there could be far more people in the Camp than
were first thought.
Interior
minister Nicolas Sarkozy told a French radio station this morning
that he would abide by whatever the authorites of the Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul
church wanted him to do, although he denied it could become a second
Sangatte.
On
Monday the building was surrounded by riot police, while the refugees
inside ignored a deadline to come out, some even threatening hunger
strikes.
Monsieur
Sarkozy also said 5000 identity cards had been distributed to people
already in the Camp. Previous estimates said there were around 1800
inside.
The
French minister announced a new round of talks with the British
Home Secretary David Blunkett on 1st and 2nd December, about what
is to be done with those at Sangatte who the United Nations decide
have well-founded asylum cases.
Meanwhile,
after a meeting with Monsieur Sarkozy this morning, Jacky Henin,
the mayor of Calais, told reporters the refugees inside the church
would have 24 hours to leave before the State assumed responsibility
for the situation.
