FIVE-STAR
FLEET
Fleet's opponents West Wickham would be looking to achieve their
first win of the season and to come away from the foot of the league
table.
From the kick-off Fleet failed to take control, West Wickham causing
a few problems. The Fleet's back line held firm not allowing the
final ball through.
Twenty-five minutes in, West Wickham were awarded a free kick from
just outside the area - it was well taken and only forced off the
line by a scramble from the Fleet's Bowles and Kennedy.
Neither keeper was tested to full capacity in the first half, both
teams finding it hard to settle into the rhythm of the game.
Thirty-six minutes into the game, a fine run by Stubbs followed
by an excellent cross to the back post found the head of Mooney
who made no mistake in hitting the back of the net.
The Fleet finally began to settle into their stride and the team
went in for their half-time talk feeling slightly more positive.
Fleet manager Tony Fanning was aware that a change of formation
was required, he needed to exploit the opposition's weaknesses.
The Fleet's wingers worked extremely hard to supply the forwards
with chances but the chances were not converted until, following
a free kick by Dean, midfielder Akindi accurately controlled the
ball, turned, beat the two accompanying
defenders and placed his shot low and hard past the keeper.
West Wickham continued to pile on the pressure with the view that
just one goal would put them back in the game, but in the 58th minute
splendid play again by Mooney resulted in his second goal.
Things were looking slightly more comfortable although there was
no room for complacency. A short corner by Mooney to McGonagal was
crossed into the six yard box and a Fleet header was pushed away
by the Wickham keeper only to find the predatory Tuna who finished
for goal number four.
Surely Wickham couldn't come back from this? Still there was time
to make certain of this win and Akindi showed how it was done by
his true grit and determination, giving him his second and the Fleet's
fifth goal.
Necchi-Ghiri then pulled a ball down on his chest, turned
and hit a ferocious shot just over the crossbar. Powell had a goal
dissallowed on a tight offside decision and as the final whistle
blew, all agreed that the change in game plan by the Fleet's manager
was the catalyst to the fine second-half performance of the Fleet's
youngsters.
Good to see four of the goals coming from the industrious Fleet
midfield, although a mention for the forwards Powell, Necchi-Ghiri
and Tuna, whose unselfish running and sensible positioning created
the Fleet's chances.
Overall a good performance by the team, not forgetting the defence
who kept their third clean sheet in four outings. Well done all.
Team: Khader, Fisher, Bowles, Dean, Kennedy, Mooney, O'Kane, Carrano,
Stubbs, Necchi-Ghiri, Powell, McGonagle, Tuna, Akindi.
