My great-grandmother was a romany from the Czech Republic. While she did pass down some of her recipes, etc. to us, she did not think it right to pass on the language to her gorjer husband or children. A few words here and there were picked up without her knowing, but it would really mean a lot to me to be able to learn the language in full. I hope someday that's possible, so that I can pass down some of my history to my own children. Also, does anyone know anything about Czech Romany? I'm looking for information on the Gerlich/Gurlik family in particular.

hello Bob good post and i agree good and bad in all, since coming on the net and listening to other peoples opinions i find my own changing about somethings i no longer see people with out our culture but with Romany Gypsy blood as gorgers like i once did but still i cant truly see them as Romany Gypsies so cant help but think that maybe a new Romany word should be made to explain the Romany Gypsies that have been raised out of Gypsy culture, we have made up so many new words since leaving India were i believe we came from, like drag wouldn't have been invented then, do anyone else think this is a good idea or am i just being my divvy self i just feel it would be nice to explain someone as what they truly are a Romany gypsy with out having been raised in Romany culture what do everyone think?, plus i must say to Elysha like myself i think most needies that go to the shows do so because they love to meet up with cousins/friends and just other gypsies in general also we love the stalls as we can buy things from them we find hard to get else were, washable mats cheaper crown darby all the stuff for baby's and so on, i love the darby cus nearly everyone i know go's but stow i love because i love to see the wagons pots old motors trailers and everything else from our past i like going to all the shows and will go to as many as i can to the end of my days but i do this for no one but myself, all my best to all Rosie

missus Lee please read my post again and take it s l o w l y. I did not direct any questions to my friend Rosie Smith, mainly because I did not ask a question. You are the one making a mountain out of a molehill.the only mountain I know in Britain is Ben Nevis, and the British did not export moles out here. You missus Lee have written more on this suject on this notice board than me I sent one post and the rest has been correcting you. I dont KNOW who did this deed ,it could well have been the owner of this field and I have not nomimated who it might be (please note Bob)I feel sorry for the ladies who have been trying to project a better image of the Romanies to have it ruined in a flash. I have not noticed your name mentioned on this subject are you a "johnny come lately "? I have found out from this board before you put your mouth in gear make sure your bnrain is not in park. I dont think this post requires an answer. All the best to my friends Chris and Rosie Keep your chins up ps missus Lee if you used your normal name we could perhaps recognise you

Kako Bill, Pennar Chris & Rosie,Churi or Shive the same.Bill there's no knowing who those folkie were Rom/Irish Traveller's or New age but I'm sure they get targeted by Fly tipper's who arn't any of them in some cases.Where my Old Uncle lives in vans in a lane near Newport every so often people at night set fire to stolen cars outside their gate making out it's my Uncle & family doing it.My Uncle says they hear them calling out Dirty Gypo's etc but of course my Uncle & family don't get much notice taken of their commplaints about it ??Good & bad in all races hey!Bokt to you all.Bob.

as with all the romany language ,depending on where you come from in different parts things are said slightly different for eg we call a knife a chiv.

hello Shauna i remember horsmanden and loved it when it was on and went every year you are right it was a real good show and shame it closed but i believe that the gypsy man still take their horses down each year and its only the stalls that no longer go,but i am not sure if this is true because i have not been down for years myself but that is what i have been told, it use to be on the second Sunday in September, it all started i believe because of hoping, the pickers would meet up on the green and it went from there,Bill its true what you say so many gypsies are trying so hard to get our people seen in a better light, in the month of June which was Gypsy and traveller History mouth all over the county poeple have been making progress in getting Romany Gypsies seen for the wonderfull things about us music, crofts, good morals, etc and then one story in the paper and we seem to be back where we started it seems so unfair when the travellers in voled may not even have been Gypsies and even if they were their is good and bad in all races of poeple as we all know i only hope that one day gorgers will see that it is the minority of Gypsies that behave in a irresponsible way and not the majority my best to all rosie

AmyMany gypsies did not register births and did not have conventional marriages, but its not true for all. Romanygenes is a good site, but also Rootschat, which has a Traveller section. Both are free. By putting your tree on Genes Reunited other people can contact you, and use Curious Fox (free). You could join the RTFHS (google it), I think its £9 a year.

I agree wid Shauna about the Derby, its not for me. People just make as much money as they can out of it. I dont need to prove Im a proper needie gal by going everywhere we're 'supposed' to go.
Thu Jul 2 18:16:16 2009

Mrs Lee
Hi Bill Martin. I think the fact that you loaded the question in Rosies direction as if she would know might have given an impression you implied Romany Travellers. Do you really think its that easy to find out what new agers or other Travellers was there? Good heavens the work of Rosie and Chris .w.s. and Cathayb and many others like them is a credit to them. The fact that the area has the highest level of fly tipping in the south east of England by fly tipping house dwellers, never headline news of course, but any little thing that can be blamed on Travellers is publicised which then you go and publicize it more. Why have you joined the make a mountain out of a molehill brigade?

Gypsy Sarah. The word for knife is CHURI
Thu Jul 2 12:38:56 2009

Chris ws
Gypsysarah, the word we have always used for a knife is -- shive. bokt Chris.
Thu Jul 2 12:08:47 2009

bill martin
mrs Lee I did not say they were Romany or anybody else all I am saying is whoever it was it has undone the good work done by posters on this site to name a few Rosie Bob Lovell, Chris ws and too many more to recall It is a shame because there has been some hard work put in to have the Romanies seen in a better light. And whoever it was they should be caught and named
Thu Jul 2 11:35:00 2009

Shauna
unfortuantly like with any race of people, theres alwas gonna be the bad ones that give the respestable ones the bad name. In response to Rosie id like to say i dont rate the Derby because it costs a fortune to park on downs, ice creams etc cost a bomb n it puts me off its too commercialised. Does anyone remember Horsmonden Horse fair over nr Tonbridge wells ? it was a small horse fair on the village green, some of locals manage to get it closed down which was a great shame, they alwas had it around Hop picking time end August/September.

hiimy great nan was a r0man gypsy im just w0ndering if any0ne kn0ws any sites where i c0uld trace back my family hist0ry, as i heard that gypsies d0 n0t register births. is this true?
Wed Jul 1 17:59:55 2009

Mrs Lee
Bill MatinThe Denmead site could have been occupied by either New Age, Irish or Romany Travellers. What strikes me is that in an area identified as the worst in the south east for fly tipping by house dwellers, this small amount of rubbish (a few bin bags) was photographed and highlighted as belonging to Travellers. Google for proof.
Wed Jul 1 12:19:49 2009

I would like fairminded Romanys, Gypsies and anyone calling themselves Travellers to google The portsmouth News and read the article on Denmead. Rosie I know we can not be sure who is responsible, but it would be nice to find out Kusti Bokt bill

My gran used to smoke a pipe and some were white and some were red,It depended what clay was used.my granfer lined his stables with red clay so when she made her pipes they were red. Most all bought pipes were white
Mon Jun 29 12:27:36 2009

Bob lovell nz
too Lou.I don't think I've replyed to your question , Dordi ! but Clay pipes were used by the poorer folkie in the past , as for them being white in colour I;d say thats because of the firing in the klin , I could be wrong ? I don't make my pipes (sweglars - by the way it means a flut in German so is a borrowd word for Rom)When I was a Chavo I made pipes from acornes and chor'd my Dadus Tovlo , Tobbacco , he never said nothing but I'm sure he knew. of course today Smoker's are treated like drug addicts , I'm not sure what to think about that but I enjoy me old pipe BUT never smoke indoors or where people are eating . What I say to people who do get on my case about my pipe is, I ask them do you Drive a motor ? most do , So I say have a suck on the exhurst for one minute - then tell me my pipe smoking is bad????Bokt to you.Bob.

shauna, I have penfolds too lol who were in the showground business, Im settled now in a house after marrying a gorger man (WONDERFUL man who trets me better than I could ever have imagined, he treats me like a princess) so some gypsies dont think Im 'real' gypsy, even tho they have gorger blood themselves from way back lol!! My aunt showed me this site, as i needed some help for school. i told the teacher that a lot of old traverlers use to make and smoke clay pipes, she'd seen these pipes before, but what i couldent tell her was how come if the clay in the ground is brown and you make pipes from it, how come all the pipes the teachers seen and i seen are white? Maybe Mr Lovell can answer my question? as he smokes a Swegal, perhaps you made it Mr lovell? Thanks LOU.

Chris pennar.A scholar , never been called that before but I'm pleased you think so, Parruka tute Miri Pennar (thank you my sister)Too Kako Bill.Kushti to see you back Kako, your post is like reading a western , keep it up.Too Jack P,Your post is interesting ? Gypsy (spelt with a capital G is not affensive To myself , we refere to our family - myself as Romani for that's what we are! unfortunitly the word gypsy with lower case g refer's to ANYONE who lives a so called gypsy life style (that is the ruling under the gypsy act 1964 in the UK. for myself I find that offensive as Gypsy was first used by NON ROMANI to describe our race ! yet some how it has been played around with so much it now has not a lot of meaning to many real Romani people today.Funny that our race can be belittled in such a way just to smooth trouble within the minds of many people who WON'T see us as a true race with real origins, language & costoms. so that is a real reason many Rom don't use the name Gypsy.Bokt to you all.Bob.

Jack P, I dont know about the word Gipsy being offensive and Gypsy not.....because both words were given to us by gorgers (non gypsies) so both could be seen either way - depending on how the person means it. I dont mind being called a gypsy or gipsy but noy a gyppo or pikey, because they are 'bad' words that insult us. My granda was from a fairground family and he only liked to be known as a showman, not a gypsy or traveller. Not cos he looked down on anyone but it was just describing exactly what he was. Im fascinated by the showpeoples lives, even tho Im settled.

does anyone know where the name FAIRNETTY comes from? Im not trying to find anyone by the way but this name seems to run in our family and I wondered how it started or which country its from, does anyone know? we're gypsy.

Might sound like a strange question, but I've been told that "gipsy" spelled as such is seen as offensive, but "gypsy" is not. Just wondering whether this is the case and/or if so, why? (I understood preferred term was Romany/Roma anyway but am specifically querying gipsy/gypsy).Can anyone advise?

oi oi to John Sampson Steve Price and Bob Lovell, and all the folki that missed me.Everybody was looking for me,I went with some city slickers on a rumour there was a band of brumbies that were nearly thoroughbreds out back of Emerald.and as I know that country I led their party, and that was all it was a rumour. They wanted to go shooting and we shared out the tucker and I left them .I went to a property where I knew the owners but they had sold to some pit street farmers (city slickers) and I needed to get some diesel and while I was there I saw this pretty pony about 13.3 hands and not very well, anyhow the owner said I could have her as they were going to put her down,so I loaded up and drove about a 100 miles to find a little town and I bought some liquid parrafin and gave her a quart down her thoat and spent a few days camped by a creek . There was nought wrong with the pony excepf she had a gutful of sand and was blocked up , the parrafin did the trick .I decided to take another way home and had to take it easy on the rough track and stop to let the pony have a rest .My missus got the police to look for me and they were looking in the wrong places. I got home about a fortnight late and then all hell broke loose. I could not phone no phones and my mobile had no service so I am still in the poo but I am home now.Rebeka M I am waiting for an email from England with hopefully some names and dates and will email you. Rosie S what makes you think I was not happy with you?ask Chris I sent an email saying why I would not answer you ,I did not want to fight with you and you could not or would not understand my posts. One other thing when you talk about "country music"dont speak for all Romanies. The same as you told someone else ,every body has their own brand of music. Kusti Bokt to you all and now I am going to catch some shuteye see what happens in the morrow bill martin

Steve Price Pral.I wanted to say your words about the Mushkro-Gavar's treating our folkie that way are honest words and good for you pral for speaking , today with internet etc Romany & Traveler Folk should be able to petition Politicians & Human rights people to get some equal status with all the other minority races within the UK.Sure there's many Rom & Gorga past & present doing kushti work on this but it needs a united frount . One thing Rom as a Race have NEVER done is started wars or the like , I say myself Rom are the original pacifist for what other races would put up with brutal punishment over hundreds of years in most counties and not take up the gun !Sure we know it's move on but what happens when moving on becomes impossible. Many of all our Old Rom men fought in the world wars & even today there's Rom men in Iran & Afganistan , YET how many Gorga Folk are aware of this WE DO AND HAVE DONE OUR BIT FOR QUEEN & COUNTRY.I say educate them , then MAYBE there will be a day when our folkie world wide are given due respect as Human beings and a Race.Right rave but I feel better , well done to you Pral.Bokt Bob .

I thought you'd like to hear about my local council which is Sutton in Surrey. This month as you know is Traveller history month. Sutton is holding exibitions and going round the schools to promote and provide information about traveller history and culture. Sutton councils member for equalities says its a way for the borough and its people to celebrate our culture and to help people appreciate the richness that the traverling comunity brings to the borough.Nice to hear a council giving traverllers some suport.

hello Paula there was two reasons the old gypsies would do that 1. to let their family know they pass though that way 2. to let over gypsies know they could get water from your house or that you would buy stuff or that your mum would give them things, they was marking your house as a good house for the mungers(old gypsy women with their baskets)...hope this helped rosie

I have always loved country music and my kids have grown up listening to it they new all the words to lorretta Lynns songs by the time they were 3!!! There are a lot of good Gypsy singers that can sing country I think its because they like nothing better than to spend the evenings playing their instruments and singing with friends and family where as most people these days prefer to watch the telly

ive been on a search on and off for a few yrs now to find out what signs were left on our pavement when I was kid. we in Bookham near the downs, on the main road between Epsom to guildford and often had gypsies with big baskets to call selling stuff especially near Derby race time. My mum always bought things and often offered bread and stuff too, one lady came often selling twigs with pretty wax flowers - I loved them. there were often marks in chalk on the pavement outside and sticks and stones but never knew what they meant and cant find out. Can you tell me or prefer not. Paula

Flamenco music does it every time for me. The Spanish tourist industry makes a fortune out of Falmenco dancing in national costume and the music etc but they dont publicise the fact that it was Spanish gypsies who wore those costumes and invented those dances.

My mother was a romany and her family took the big gun to India about 70 years ago or so.She had the name MaCauley-Hayes but I cant find anything on her.Does anyone have ancestors who were on that caravan to India from Spain.I dont know how many caravans went but they were all related. If they are still alive they must be very old and I would really like to speak with them before its too late.
