Walks: Upnor's The King's Arms

Distance 2.5 miles. The walk has a fairly steep ascent and descent, but the views over the Medway are worth the slog.

Upnor is just north of Rochester near the junction of the A228 and the A289.

1. Follow the path facing right, and away from the river, going down the hill. After 50 yards take the right fork and continue beside Upnor Castle House and down the steps to the road.

2. Turn right and follow the road to Lower Upnor. Walk along the concrete frontage until you reach the stone pillar.

3. Turning left will take you past the Arethusa Venture Centre and when it bends left, take the tarmac footpath ahead which goes uphill. The right hand path at the three way fork and follow the path until you reach the minor road.

4. Go through the gateway on the left and into a parking area. Go along the top of a field past a seat. Follow the top of the field and at the end turn right. Go through a gap in the hedge and walk past the play area. When you get to the main road walk for about 200 yards Turn left for 100 yards onto a narrower road.

5. At the end of the road go through the wooden gate on the right and follow the path as it goes down the hill.

6. At the T junction with another path, turn left and follow this path for 400 yards parallel to the road. When it reaches the road turn left for 100 yards. Walking right, up the step at the footpath sign just past Normandie House on the right, follow the path back up to Upper Upnor.
