Your StoriesYou are in: Kent > People > Your Stories > Running round the Isle of Wight ![]() Gavin Griffiths Running round the Isle of WightBy Gavin Griffiths Gavin is aiming to run the 67 mile path all the way round the Isle of Wight in just two days. Not a easy task for a 17 year-old diabetic. I am taking on the challenge of running the 67 mile coastal path around the Isle, starting and finishing at Ryde pier and taking the clockwise route around. The event will be happening over the 11th and 12th of July to raise money for diabetes research through Diabetes UK.
On the evening of the 11th there will be a live gig at the Wight Rock Bar in Ryde, doors are opening there from 7pm, Floors and Walls, The Special K's and Audio Inc will be performing and so too will be my sister Kaylie Griffiths who will be singing with Floors and Walls. ![]() Floors and Walls This is a massive challenge for me, I am only 17 and not yet old enough to run the London Marathon, this is more than double the distance. Also I am a type 1 diabetic, I have been for nearly 10 years now, and while running such a distance I am at risk of suffering a major hypo, that at worst could put me into a diabetic comma. I have already run long distances in the past and consider myself a running freak which hopefully will see me through. Being a diabetic myself is what has motivated me to raise money towards diabetes research, as I have had nearly 10 years experience of it and always wanted to do something about it and fight back in a way. I am eager to get a good amount raised for the cause and also to inspire all the people with the condition that having it cannot stop you from doing whatever you want with your life. ![]() Kaylie Griffiths will be singing. I have completed a few long runs recently in preparation. I ran the Thanet coastal path, which is 29 miles long. I completed it in 3 hours 1 minute last year, this time we believe I did it in about 2 hours 50 minutes! I did a practice run on the Isle itself, 16 miles from Yarmouth to Cowes, which I completed in about 1 hour 40 mins. One thing for sure about the run is it is certainly going to be interesting and exciting, it is an immense challenge for me, but one that's going to be a lot of fun.
