Rebranding Margate

With the demise of Margate being the subject of discussion in Sir Alan's boardroom on the BBC's The Apprentice programme, we want to know: How would you rebrand Margate?

Margate is a traditional seaside town with beautiful sandy beaches, arcades, fish and chips and donkey rides and for over 200 years it was a popular destination for holiday-makers from all over the UK, especially London.

However, in more recent years tourists have rejected the delights of Margate to travel further afield and that, coupled with the closure of Dreamland, has led to unemployment, poverty and decline.

Margate beach

Margate as a thriving seaside town

But regeneration is on the horizon with such projects as the building of the Turner Contemporary art gallery and a proposed scheme to revive the Dreamland site into a tourist attraction featuring historic amusement park rides.

The question is how should Margate be regenerated? We asked people in Margate what they thought:

 The word on the streets

Should it be a centre for art and culture or a traditional seaside town, could it be both?

WHERE DOES ONE START. REBUILD THE THINGS THAT MADE MARGATE GREAT TO COME TO AND ENJOY. I HAVE WATCHT THE DECLAIN OF MARGATE FOR OVER 20 YEARS THE FAT CATS HAVE TAKING FROM THE TOWN AND LEFT IT TO DECAY WITHOUT REPLENISHING ITS ORIDGENAL ATRACTIONS THAT WERE THE VERY LIFES BLOOD OF WHY PEOPLE CAME TO MARGATE FOR THAT HOLIDAY .DAY OUT WKE END THE CHANCE OF A REST FROM EVERY DAY GRIME. THE FAT CATS HAVE TAKEN TO MUCH. SO REPLACE THE DREAMLAND,PUT THE CLOCK TOWER BACK PEIR BACK TURNER CENT ON IT.GET THE LIGHTS UP FESTIVENESS ALONG THE SEA FRONT .MARGATE IS A BLACK CLOUD AREA AS IS.MARGATE SHOULD BE A PLACE FOR ALL TYPES OF GENDER FOR ENTERTAINMENT VENUES

From a comment just posted at "Tip Top Road Trip" blog: 1 comments:Jeremy Jacobs said... I hope you're right about Margate's future. Being born and bred there, I don't share your optimism. For years Margate has been going downhill. I do not believe there's the vision, political will, creativity or innovation amongst those in power to make a real difference. Your second photo down of the garish plastic hoarding above an amusement arcade, in my opinion, is just typical of the absurd decision making of the local authority in recent times. How could you allow that to be plastered over a beautiful Regency building once the Kent Hotel? The recent news that Margate is now the most boarded-up town in the UK confirms what I have been saying and writing for years - Margate is the failure capital of the UK.

Hi,I know its a little late but i was just reading the article regarding Margates rebranding on the Apprentice programme! While watching the show i thought at the time of a play on Margates name and thought of the phrase/term "My Gate" this in turn can be used to highlight the varied things Margate has to offer ie:"My Gate to the Arts!""My Gate to Culture!""My Gate to the Sea!""My Gate to Music!""My Gate to Life!" etcSee what you think.regards.Rick

do what they did to Miami Beach. Let properties out cheaply to artists which in turn will atract tourists to see their work which in turn will generate other retail outlets. you will need a council that is enthusiastic though. the current one seems to have given up completely on the town. do they ALL live round the corner in Broadstairs?

visited margate for the first time today - what a disappointment. tired, delapitated buildings - numerous boarded up shops and dubious characters around the town with unleashed dogs running around. cash for gold shops and primark the only places doing well. are shop rents too high? why aren't the council trying to encourage independent traders into the town.where is the police presence in the town? why isn't the council enforcing owners of the promenade buildings to tidy up and maintain their properties.and who agreed the building of the hideous block of flats right on the seafront? look to southend and brighton for more beachside cafes and bars/maintain boardwalks properly/more childrens rides on the beach. what happened to the donkey rides? more deckchairs and wind breaks for hire.check out barry island, councillors - another run down resort which lost butlins but is coming back with beautifully maintained promenade, plenty of promenade eating places, visible police/psco presence and easy parking for the daytrippers.also - discreet russibh bins which actually get emptied during the day!

Margate has become run down, decayed, poor and sleazy. Every building needs to be renovated, and painted. The shops need improving, and the facilities and attractions need updating and modernising. The whole area needs a facelift, and lots of money spent on the infrastructure. The Turner Centre is a nice idea, but the money could be better spent. I was born in Cliftonville, and do not want to be eternally ashamed about it.

Margate needs a new theme park to attract the families back again and how about having festivals and parties on the beach? It's a perfect venue if the seafront was revamped! And why make it into a gay community?! surely a making somewhere for families to have fun is much more important!

margate has become a dump.. i loved the place in the late 60s and 70s.. put dreamland back as it was, and the vistitors will flood back.

Margate needs something to atrack families. Perhaps a mini Alton Towers for the S.E. Sadly Art galleries arn't for the masses and therefore won't do anything for Margate as a tourist resort. Now would a young family with children want to visit an art centre; I don't think so!!!!

i think that since Dreamland has been closed the enviroment hasn't been as buisy, it hasnt had as many vistitors, and now Margate it's self is going down hill. So what do you do to solve this, instead of using the governements money to buold more houses and estates, use it for the whole enviroment and rebuild Dreamland and its cinema. Make sure that it does have alot of sercurity, so not like last time, nothing gets burnt down

I think that Margate would do well looking at Southend, there is an amusement park there called Adventure Island which is excellent, with rides and attractions for all ages.Margate needs to attract businesses to the town, regenerate the seafront and get back the family feel I enjoyed as a child, sadly I have to take my children to Essex rather than stay local to where I live.I think that the planned vintage park sounds good but would it just be a collection of old rides no - one wants anymore rather than competing with the likes of Thorpe park and Alton towers.

What Margate needs is a marina thousands of boats domestic and foreign visit kent with very few places to moor up for the night, marinas bring life to any seaside town and the legacy of such a project reaches far into the future. if margate had a harbour 50 years ago it wouid not be in this decline, after all it has kept ramsgate and many others alive and kicking.has anyone seen chatham marina lately ? The solent is full of harbours boats and money. Kent should be the solent of the east with private investers breaking down the doors to be part of the gravy train. All we need is vision and a comitment to make kent the premier county.

Margate has 7 blue flag beaches, the only COUNTY to beat this is Cornwall with 8Thanet has 9 miles of superb sandy beachs. Lifegaurds and Council safety boats are there on all main beaches. Go for the beach and safe fun aspect. Day trips? everything from France to Chatham Dockyard, Leeds, Walmer and Deal CastleNo mention of the Turner Centre, why not? Not very good all roundAndy

Kent Garden ofEngland,Margate the "COSTA DEL MAR GATE" of England!!Holiday! Makit in Margate! The New British reviera! What the council need is a twin spanish town and then work closly with a project manager but from this twine town with free hands one!!The best will be someone come in with fresh pair of eyes! I will be happy to get involved!! here 1 simple idee : Free ride in Dble bus coach every week ends London-Costa del Mar gate , the first saison!! Get the all community involved ,with fire work, party on the beach ,lots of games on the beach , and a very good restarant and bars,pubs..its crusial that all locals get involved with such a big project.Any way..good luck to margate!

Margate is in dire need of regeneration but any council that thinks it can rely on an art gallery to bring back the holiday makers is very wrong. Margate needs Dreamland infact I would suggest that the creation of a heritage funpark is far more important to the town than the art gallery. However I believe Margate can be a traditional seaside resort and a centre for art and culture but this dream is years off. A simple facelift of run down properties would be a good start. I look forward to living in a regenerated Margate.

the trouble with Margate is, it is tired and run down. i would propose removing traffic from the main road and replace it with gardens, grass, market stalls, and such like.as for the Dreamland plot i think an animal type park with attractions for both children and adults alike. more lights along the seafront and street entertainment for the evenings.these are just a few of the ideas i have for Margate. As for the Turner Centre i think in 20 years time it will be just another place for the vandals to have more throwing practice. time will tell.do you realize that the turner centre will be facing out to see, it,s a pity it will not be facing the setting sun as we do have beautiful sunsets here in Margate.

Iv got many happy childhood memories of Margate as as a seaside town before it got to how it is today, I'm now living up in leicestershire and have done for 20yrs but I'm originally from maidstone born and bread untill I 14yrs old so I would like to see it back to how I remmber it a lovely seaside where little children can play in the sand and the sea safely.

Mr A.S.Goldsack - Gay people do live in Margate. I should know I'm one of them!

Once the Turner Contemorary is built I would certainly try to market the town to the Gay community. Being Gay my self anf having moved there 6 years ago I think Margate is a great place to live and visit. The Turner Contemporary should appeal to a more 'arty' crowd. There is also a thriving music and arts scene too with venues such as The Brittania and West Bar. We also have our own Thanet Pride too! Plus we have great beaches. We should market the town for 'long weekends'.

A gay resort, Yes! That is in the true meaning of the word gay....the word's primary meaning being "joyful", "carefree", "bright and showy". That is the Margate I remember and that is how it should be again.

As a resort its finished & it will never be a holiday destination again. The Turner centre will only drain recourses, Dreamland is in the past. The majority of the guest houses/hotels are out of date, if still trying to stay open & not boarded up. Its a tired, worn out 'had-it' resort & who wants a holiday in a crumbling town, with a few amusement arcades. There's little to do & even less when it rains. There's an overall feeling of decay in Thanet but in Margate its died.

to rebrand margate i would suggest they hold more festivals how about having a 1950s week the era when margate was at its peak bring back the old busses the old coaches that used to ply for mystery tours around kent, also have entertainment reflecting that great era with open air concerts, on the other side of the coin the last time i visited margate the seafront was crying out for some nice seafront restaurants.

With all the young people growing up in Margate, it is about time we had more sports and leisure facilities. All the council seem to want to build are flats, flats and more flats. Take Cliftonville for example. Take all the retired people who have moved to the old Butlins's site, I think they would all appreciate a lovely swimming pool, gym etc on the cliff tops. Must say how lovely it is to see Dane Park being used for sporting activities. How many times are local people going to want to visit the Turner Centre when it is built? All that money wasted could have built a wonderful sports complex for everyone to use.

Mr A.S.Goldsack
Please leave gay people out of the frame and consentrate on sand & sea (No sex). The apprentices were stupid and showed no respect for the once proud seaside Kent town. It wasa much better place to visit in the period just after the 1939-45 war.
