Emmetts Garden

Part of Emmetts Garden has been restored after old photographs were discovered showing how the garden looked in the early 20th century.

"Hopefully all our hard work has paid off. Frederick Lubbock was passionate about his garden and I hope our visitors enjoy discovering it."

Mark Nelson, Head Gardener

The garden was created by a banker called Frederick Lubbock, between 1893 and 1895 and the shrub garden was added between 1900 and 1908. The garden layout has been attributed to Lubbock's friend, gardener William Robinson. After Lubbock's death in 1927 the estate was purchased by an American geologist Charles Watson Boise, who until 1964 carried out sympathetic alterations and additions to the house and grounds thereby preserving the garden's original character.

The garden team at the National Trust property has redesigned the overgrown rock garden using newly-discovered photos from the Lubbock family album to piece together how it used to look at the start of the 20th century.

The team have cut back the overgrown rock garden and have turned  it into a scree garden using the old images for reference.

Emmetts Garden covers an area of about 4 acres at the highest point in Kent on the 600 foot sandstone ridge near Sevenoaks. It is not so much a garden as an arboretum, although there is a formal rose garden adjacent to the Victorian house.  Next to the garden is a further 14 acres of wooded valley which is also open to the public.
