Nature FeaturesYou are in: Kent > Nature > Nature Features > Are we alone? ![]() Are we alone?According to figures released by the MoD, police and military bases received 285 reports of UFO sightings in 2008. Some of those were in Kent. It's a startling increase on the 135 sightings reported in 2007, and the 97 reported in 2006. Testimonies included numerous witnesses claiming they had seen 12 orange objects in the night sky for half an hour over Basingstoke, and a Royal Navy aircraft engineer's report that he had watched a UFO for three minutes near Weston-super-Mare before it 'zoomed off'. BBC Radio Kent's John Warnett and Julia George discussed the increase in sightings over Kent. Help playing audio/video BBC Radio Kent's Ed Cook has taken a closer look at the report. Help playing audio/video Kent had nine reported sightings in 2008, including two over Rainham. These are the descriptions of some of those sightings: Over RainhamA UFO that looked like a yellowy light. The object was quite near and fairly low down in the sky. There was no sound. Over TonbridgeAn object was flying around in circles at aeroplane leven and sounded like an industrial train. There was a strange flashing on the object. Over DoverThere were half a dozen glowing lights. They were an orange fire colour. They were silent and moving across the sky at the speed of a helicopter. Over KenningtonOrange shape travelling North West to South Weat at fair pace, 2000ft plus. Bright orange. Similar in shape to an inverted light bulg. There was no sound. Watch footage taken by Brighton Police over the south coast: Help playing audio/video Police Footage of a UFOThe images captured over the south coast were filmed by a police helicopter. The UFO was spotted travelling across the coast and was followed for about 10 miles.
