Are we alone?

According to figures released by the MoD, police and military bases received 285 reports of UFO sightings in 2008. Some of those were in Kent.

It's a startling increase on the 135 sightings reported in 2007, and the 97 reported in 2006.

Testimonies included numerous witnesses claiming they had seen 12 orange objects in the night sky for half an hour over Basingstoke, and a Royal Navy aircraft engineer's report that he had watched a UFO for three minutes near Weston-super-Mare before it 'zoomed off'.

Kent had nine reported sightings in 2008, including two over Rainham. These are the descriptions of some of those sightings:

Over Rainham

A UFO that looked like a yellowy light. The object was quite near and fairly low down in the sky. There was no sound.

Over Tonbridge

An object was flying around in circles at aeroplane leven and sounded like an industrial train. There was a strange flashing on the object.

Over Dover

There were half a dozen glowing lights. They were an orange fire colour. They were silent and moving across the sky at the speed of a helicopter.

Over Kennington

Orange shape travelling North West to South Weat at fair pace, 2000ft plus. Bright orange. Similar in shape to an inverted light bulg. There was no sound.

Police Footage of a UFO

The images captured over the south coast were filmed by a police helicopter. The UFO was spotted travelling across the coast and was followed for about 10 miles. None of the crew members on board the helicopter had seen anything like it before or since.

i was walking through a field at the top end of canterbury and saw what i first thought was a planet,as it was too big to be a star, and was orange. then i realised it was moving very slowly. it sped up suddenly, then slowed again before stopping for about two mins. i watched as it slowly started moving again, then started flashing white, it flew off towards dover

At 18.15 last night there was a very odd orange fire ball in the sky above tonbridge station, it moved slowly away moving upwards, at first i thought it was a hot air balloon, or though i did not think that they could fly at night, it made no sound and then when up into the air where it disappeared. very strange.

About 5 am on Tuesday 20th October 2009 I was in the garden of our home in Sandwich Bay, putting away some garden tools as we were about to leave for Heathrow. I saw a very bright white light in the skies over towards France - I thought it might be an aircraft coming in to land at Kent International Airport, but it seemed to come to a stop. It stayed in one spot for about 2 minutes - I thought it might be turning - when it suddenly became bright red and described a sort of parabola towards the sea, a curving steep fall - I was terrified that I was witnessing a terrible accident when the light stopped short of the sea, then bounced in large loops towards the land. It stopped again, then returned along the horizon, this time in a straight flight, then rose extremely swiftly to its position before the first fall. It stayed there for about 10 minutes, gradually becoming dimmer. I could detect no noise. I am sending this because I really cannot explain the weird swooping flight of this object.

I've seen these Orange glowing lights in Tonbridge, about three weeks ago, cannot remember the exact date.. Upon reading the comments here I find it quite strange that others have seen the same kind of thing I have..And Orange amber glowing light. Three in fact. Me and my Girlfriend was driving home, And I noticed that these three lights where not like any aircraft colour in the night sky. We stopped the car and looked in amazement when we saw one descent toward the horizon, but then the other two got very close then became one, and shot off in an easterly direction. Was all very exciting, and at the same time kinda scary. We are not sure what we saw, but I know it moved like nothing I've ever seen before.

Saturday 22 August 9:30pm ish: About 10 minutes after driving off the Eurostar the sky was filled with yellow/orange lights. I thought I might be hallucinating after driving for 15 hours from SW France but my wife saw them too. Also several cars braked abruptly to watch them. They were slow moving, low flying, lantern-like lights...we couldn't stop talking about it afterwards. Thought I'd add this after seeing Tom's comments below.

At about 23.30 on 05/09/09 I was looking out of my open window in my flat in Sevenoaks, Kent which is on the road to Otford, when I saw two very distinct bright Orange shaped objects flying side by side. One would speed up then hang back slightly whilst the second then sped up to catch up. They then flew side by side, quite slowly but the movement didn't look natural as an aircraft would do. I initially thought maybe it was a couple of fighters as we have airshows round these areas and Biggin Hill is up the road. They carried on side by side and then in the distance a third Orange object appeared identical to the first two. This one travelled much faster in order to catch up with the first two. The reason I couldn,t believe what I was witnessing was because not only was the way they moved strange, but there was no Green and Red Lights on either side of the objects which every normal aircraft has on either wing so you can tell from a distance which direction it is travelling in and secondly the was absolutely no noise, no delayed engine noise left in there wake as they passed, and they were low enough that you would have heard something. The nights sky was quite clear and there was no background noise so I am quite sure of what I saw and heard. Interesting to read other people have seen three orangey objects over Kent with no noise.

At 8:30 pm on Sunday 27th Aug 09, waved my relatives off after a family visit at the top of my road (Shoreham, nr Sevenoaks in Kent) we all looked up because we saw what we thought was a plane but looked like the side of it was on fire (maybe an engine) could not see the usual tail lights of a plane and was going quite quickly, have not seen anything on news regarding a plane being on fire, we all thought it was a bit strange.

On Saturday, 29th August at approx 9.30pm we saw a series of slow moving, orange glowing lights over Rainham, Kent. They travelled in a diagonal line - 2 side by side leading and about 6 or more followed. At first we thought that they were helicopters but the movement was not quite right and there was no sound. Our neighbours also witnessed this and none of us could find an explanation.Has there been any other report or confirmation? We are all baffled! Thank you.

I saw orange lights tonight in Wolverhampton (29/8/09. I missed the fist bout but my friend saw about 12, she phoned me and I saw 3 together in a triangle, moving slowly, under the cloud level and definatley lower than an aeroplane (there was one in the sky at the time which was much higher) I dont think for one minute I have seen a UFO, we thought it might be a meteor shower?

We had been watching the firework display at Herne Bay on the 22nd August looking towards the harbour (north) when from behind an orange orb appeared quite low in the sky gradually losing height until it just seemed to disappear on the sea, 5 mins later another orange orb came over from the same direction and exactly the same thing happened. Several people saw the same thing happen and my son who was at home in Beltinge watching the firework display from the bedroom window also saw the same flying objects which changed direction at approximately the same time as we saw the objects.

Hi, i live no where near to kent as i'm in the midlands, but this is the only page i can find to write something down. I was looking out of the window upstairs when 3 orangey objects (1 larger 2 smaller) appeared and flew out over the distance, then a couple of minutes later another one came from and went in the exact same direction. They were very low, and it is so cloudy tonight that there are no stars out. We had good view of them for quite some time until the trees in the distance obscurred our vision. What on earth was this that we saw? I have the heeby jeeby's now but am quite excited also!!

on the 28th August 2009 at approx 10pm at Tower hamlets estate in Dover Kent, i was sitting in my chair in the living room watching telly when i looked up at the window to see an orange in colour light in the sky, which did not seem to be very far away,, i went to look at it thinking it might be a helicopter ! but when i looked up i watched it for about 5 mins travelling in a straight line directly above me going slow enough to follow it comfortably with my eyes, and then noticed it was not one object but 6 round orange lights formed in what appeared to be a circle,, there was no noise at all from this, i since then have checked out on this in Dover to find that on many occasions this has been seen by others here and elswhere in the past and been recorded,, this is the first time i have seen anything like it!

It was about 02.15 this morning in Hythe and I was looking out my window, im in the loft and I looked over towards the direction of folkestone. I thought there was an unusual glow to the sky quite beautiful infact as if in the horizon there was a fire. Then I noticed that there was an object in the sky. It was way up with the stars, it didnt look like it was moving. I can only describe it as an orange object, much bigger than a star and smaller than the moon. I was quite confused, so I went down stairs and looked to see if I could see it from another window and I could!!! within 10 minutes or so the object had gone.Im totally boggled and really not sure what I saw last night.Did anyone else ?Thursday August 27 2009
