Kent's beavers

Ham Fen is the home to a growing population of beavers after being hunted to extinction in Great Britain for their meat and fur.

Kent's beavers population all comes from Norway, where their highly successful breeding programme meant that they had more than they could handle.

 Beavers in Kent

Beavers are monogamous, so pairs were caught and brought over to Kent, the first pair being released in 2001.

Kent Wildlife Trust, Wildwood has brought over several families of beavers since then, and the animals are harvesting the trees and plants, raising the water levels by constructing dams and adding to the wetland habitat already on the site.
