Supporting our Armed Forces this Christmas
OK, so it was a little ahead of time to start talking about Christmas, but this year we started early for a well-deserved cause.
BBC Radio Kent and SSAFA (Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association Forces Help) teamed up to send gifts to our brave troops on the frontline.
Corporal de Ville
This was a response to the gifts last year:
"When we returned from operations we were however rewarded. Tucked away in the corner of the cookhouse our own Santa’s grotto, our little bit of cheer, a table laid for Christmas with a parcel waiting for each of us, we were tired, dusty and rich with the smell of sweat but a smile adorned everyone of our faces.
"We hadn’t been forgotten, our efforts were appreciated and our nation had reached out with care and gratitude giving each of us the lift we required, a pat on the back and most importantly that show of thanks which is all too easily forgotten. If only the beer had been alcoholic and the mortars had given us some respite, we could have been almost anywhere just for a moment."
Corporal de Ville, 133 Field Workshop Company, 103 Battalion
The collection ended on Wednesday 15th October and the response we had from you was tremendous Hundreds of gifts were donated across the county with our CSV Team busy collecting and getting them ready for the BIG WRAP, which took place on Saturday 18th November on the Isle of Sheppey with the help of the Sheppey Sea Cadets! It was a wonderful day which saw everyone chipping in to get the presents sent off in time for Christmas.
Such was the huge response we had many presents leftover which can not be sent over to Afghanistan or Iraq due to the strain on the supply chain which provides operational essentials such as ammunition, food and medical supplies. Therefore, SSAFA have kindly organised to get the rest of your generous Christmas gifts to our troops serving here in the UK.
Thank you so much for all your donations, they will go very far in giving comfort to our troops.
