On the couch with Ben Loka
Ben Loka is part of the new generation of movie makers. Hailing from Maidstone, the 25 year old makes videos from the couch from his living room and posts them on internet websites such as You Tube.
So popular is the film maker that over 13,600 fans subscribe to his film channel, meaning that when Loka uploads a new movie, they are informed straight away, gaining the work instant popularity.
A signature style
Some of Loka’s signature videos include a celebration of vegetarianism, a performance of a song called ‘Hare Krishna’ and a discussion on the clichés regularly found in television sitcoms and online video blogs.
Interaction also appears vital to Loka’s films. In a continued series titled ‘On the couch with Ben Loka,’ Loka answers questions that have been recorded by fans. In the fifth edition of the series, Loka humorously talks about becoming online film star.
“There are a lot of myths and rumours about how a person can become famous on You Tube. Stuff like ‘be yourself,’ and ‘make good videos and people will naturally subscribe.’ All of these things are lies. The reason you are on You Tube is because no one likes you! Be the complete opposite of who you are.”
Video blogging as a community
Ben Loka’s success is evidence of the growing video blogging community, where people share their general views via a personal video camera. Popular blogger Johnny Durham otherwise known as JohnnyDurham19 believes that Loka’s popularity is due to his sense of humour.
“Ben Loka is a comical genius! He's also a very talented musician, and his personality is so addictive that it's simply impossible not to LOVE Ben's videos!”
Internet Zombie Movie creator Paperlilies, who offline goes by the name of Bryony Matthewman feels that Ben is best described with the emoticon smiley face ‘:)’.
“I think Ben's videos are popular because he has a peculiarly British sense of humour that translates to audiences around the world. He is funny, charming and kind, and his videos are hilarious!”
