A sonic artist in action

Dom's Arty bit - Sonic Art

A Kent university is leading the way in a new form of art - sonic art. It's a complicated process, but involves manipulating sound. We asked Matt Wright and Paul Adams of Canterbury Christ Church University to create a new piece of sonic art for us!

Sonic art, like many art forms, is not easy to describe. It involves manipulating sounds to make them into another sound - but it is not necessarily what would usually be described as music.

Despite the fact it is often created and performed on a computer, sonic art in some form or another has been around for decades. It has sparked plenty of controversy in that time - some people say it isn't art or music, just noise, others say it's simply a very different way of listening to sound.

To create our own piece of artwork, our reporter Karina Barker did things a little bit back to front. First, she interviewed Matt Wright and Paul Adams, sonic artists based at Canterbury Christ Church University in Broadstairs. Then she gave them a copy of the unedited interview, and asked them to create a piece of work from it.

You can hear the finished result here.

The university is launching a BA in Sonic Arts in September, and is already at the forefront of the sonic arts scene in the UK. One of only a handful in the UK, the course will give students the opportunity to be creative with music technology, developing their knowledge and skills of music and related media through the production of electronic and recorded sound.  It will also set them in good stead for a career in audio production, or as sonic artists.

A series of Sonic Arts events are being held at the university between February and April, featuring some of the genre's biggest names so potential students, or just those who are interested can find out more.

Whatever you think of it, sonic art is definitely something that Kent should be proud of.
